It's about convenience. That's really what you're paying for.
If you can afford it, plop down the full price. No hassles. Best seats in the house. The end.
If you want to shop around, stand in lines, or hover over websites and discount locations to see if your show comes up, that's less convenient (to say the least), but your reward is that you (hopefully but not always) get to see the same exact show for less money.

EXACTLY THE END
A bunch of Whimps who will pay whatever is told to them instead of standing on their own two feet.

show lover, I am still not following you.
Is a "Whimp" someone who uses discounts?
As numerous people have already stated, there will always be folks to pay the full/premium prices. There will always be folks paying discounted prices. It all comes out in the wash...or sometimes not so when the average ticket price of a show becomes abysimal.

The heartening thing about this thread is that it proves there are at least twelve people on this board who are over eighteen. I mean, I like teenagers and all, but one does weary of all the "who's the hottest in South Pacific" threads.
I, too, have read this thread and have no idea what it's about. And I'm jiggy with that.

My ancient brain (WAY over 30!) just suffered its first meltdown.
I'm sure there is a point in this, evein if a stupid one, but I think I'll steer clear of this thread and go listen to some show tunes.

BK this is what I am saying it did bring out the people who do care more than does Patti sign after every show.
Lets have more mature talk

This isn't mature. It's absolute nonsense.
At least asking if Patti signs autographs after every show is a legitimate question. This thread is just nonsense and confusion.

Well regarding the gas thing, I have seen on the news that prices did go down due to Americans driving less. I am sure that in some areas people had to drive but I did notice more people taking public transportation while prices were up.
So back on topic....I will start with my age since that, for some reason, seems to be important! I am 47. I live in Denver, as most of you probably know(!). To the op regarding shows that come to your town. Here in Denver, shows are cheaper. (Although Denver Center attractions has started Golden Cirlcle tickets this past year. Front of orchestra is now over 100 bucks. The rest of the orchestra is in the 70's. Something we don't normally do, discount codes, popped up while Drowsy Chaperone was here a few months ago.) I don't know about other cities but I would suspect tickets are lower in other places for touring shows.
I don't even make 35 thousand but I am able to take trips to NYC. (Cost of living is much lower here though) When I plan a trip I do what a lot of people have already said. I plan ahead and find discounts. I have paid full price and I have also had a number of comped tickets. As far as those who have seen shows 10 times, well that's their business. Personally, I would not see a show that many times. I have always wondered where some of the people get the money to do this but I suspect it may be student rush or lotto. Sometimes I look at it like a movie that you like. You see it in the theater a few times and then you buy the DVD and watch it at home as many times as you like. A lot of people do that and, unfortunately, with theater, you can't buy the DVD, you have to pay to see it again. (Unless, in some cases it does come out on DVD)
As far as ticket prices go...yes, it would be nice if we all stood up and protested the high ticket prices and that nasty little charge for aisle seats. But I would suspect that a major part of those prices are production costs. Until they come down, the ticket prices won't. (I have posted the link to the Theater Talk broadcast that discusses this) They also discuss the union and what they won't give up. That, it seems, may also be a factor. But as long as people will pay the prices, the prices will stay high. Also, we have had tourists from overseas coming in that don't mind paying the prices because their money went further over here. My friend who is a concierge would tell me how much tickets were going for the top shows and how people were having no problem paying for them. Needless to say that with the state of the global economy, that has changed. I think that the economy is going to change thigs. How, I am not sure. I have heard speculation that prices may come down in a few years. We have to wait and see. But no matter what, Braodway isn't going anywhere. It will go through a change just like everything else.
Hope that made some sense as I, like many of you, have been a bit confused by some things the OP posted.

I'm just back from a trip to NYC where I managed to see 9 shows in 5 days but only ended up paying full price for one of them.
I'd say pretty much MOST of the people on this board love theatre enough to know how & where to get discounts and will only pay full price if absolutely necessary. I plan my trips well in advance, but I've still used lottery a number of times. Failing that, standing room or cancellations. Maybe I've just been incredibly lucky, but I've NEVER not got to see a show on an afternoon or evening when I planned to.

"WHY do people on this board always comment about the way people talk."
Because if people cannot form coherent sentences, how can you take that person seriously?

I'm well over 30 and am quite well, thank the Lord! :) Somebody said "TKTS"--right on! Wife & I saw Gypsy for $100 total. The ending wasn't very good. That running onto the audience and running back to the curtains by Mama looked like it was some kind of filler ending. And yes, I know it was supposed to show her coming apart. The rest of the show was OK, except I'm tall and the seats were designed for people when the theater opened eons ago. People were much shorter back then and a LOT thinner.
To the person who started the room: the phrase is "a lot." It is NOT one word. That was but one very glaring error. And that goes to show that A LOT of students under 30 can't spell or write good sentences.
As far as Broadway shows go, the big ones do come here in Minneapolis where we have three venues that are doing very well.
So I think we'll be seeing off-Broadway shows when we come to Gotham. We only have to drive two miles from our home, park in a ramp and go to a Broadway show here for far less than the NY ticketed price.

I am well over thirty, am a single mom and a teacher...so trust me when I say money is tight. I live in Boston and manage to get to NY up to 9 times a year. Sometimes with my kids; somethimes without. I think B'way is a valuable way to spend our money.
VERY seldom do I pay full price for ANY of our tickets and I don't stand in line. I often opt for less than stellar seats, and find discount codes. I will spring for full price tix when I have to: assuming I'm totally jazzed to see a particular show.
For folks that can afford to buy full price tix: great for them. The theater needs them. Because they do, is how I can get a discount.
If I don't want to see a show no one is going to force me to spend my money on one. So WHAT if they put on another Disney show: if you don't like it don't see it. Plain and simple.
NOT buying any tickets until the price goes down will only cause MORE shows to close...it is the horrid economy NOT the ticket prices that are causing it.
And sorry to the OP: your posts are indeed rather incomprehensible...if you cannot communicate with the written word, then make a phone call.
And I agree: it's great to know how many "old farts" there are on this board...so thanks for that!

I sort of hear what he is trying to say, I just think he is using the wrong forum by posting on here. How is this going to help ticket prices?
I pay full price and discount prices for tickets. My only gripe is that the minute Young Frankenstein or Billy Elliot go on sale (and I usually call on the first day)and ready to pay full orchestra price yet there are no good orchestra seats available because they block so many spots off for premium seats. And I am sorry to say that even the best shows that I have ever seen, are not worth a premium ticket price.
I have some satisfaction when Young Frankenstein is not doing as well as expected at the box office. I was willing to pay about $125 or so but $450 Which was the premimum seat for the Saturday that I wanted to go...no way. I couldnt even get a good orchestra seat for the regular price, and I called the first day. I certainly dont have any ill will towards YF (I dont want the actors or even producers to suffer but that the idea that they block off so many tickets for premium seats. I "get it" but dont like it.
Not that this post will do anything in the way of having more regular seats available than premium seats.Just sayin

Methusela here.
I think the OP's first language is not English and that's why there's some difficulty understanding all his sentences.
What I think he's saying is that the prices of most shows are too high, and judging from the amount of posts he reads here of us complaining about the quality of shows, that we agree with him. He's also saying it's hard for him to avail himself of all the discounts because he lives out of town.
I may be wrong, but this is what I got out of the thread.
