I'd love to see Queen Audra in anything!
I'm sorry but absolutely not. She reads too old to play a twenty-something year old women (at least Lauren Ambrose looks much younger than 39) and I'm not sure how well she'd fare playing pre-transformation Eliza.
She can play the street where you live.

Agree! Next May I am traveling north on the Pacific Surfliner Train to see her in concert with the Los Angeles Opera. Four days later, I will see her in concert again here at home with the San Diego Symphony.
I am slightly obsessed with Miss Audra McDonald.

I was lucky enough to see her in Porgy & Bess. I missed seeing her in Shuffle Along and in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill (although I recommended it to friends vacationing in London this summer and they loved it).
she would have been perfect for it in the mid-90's!
I absolutely adore Audra McDonald, but she is too old for Eliza.

OK--I'll respond---NO.
She would sing it sublimely-every song, especially 'On the street where you live'--but--there is a certain 'type' required to play Eliza and it isn't Ms McDonald.

Eliza doesn't sing ON THE STREET WHERE YOU LIVE. It's Freddy Eynsford Hill who sings the song.

I'd like to see Audra McDonald in ANYTHING. Too old? Don't care. :P

You kinda missed the point of that post.

I DO know that, it's just that I would love to hear Ms McDonald sing that song. Never heard a woman sing it and she would do it beautifully.
PS--Thanks dramamama--you get me...x
LOVE Linda-will check it out---thanks
Linda Eder sings "On The Street" on her "Broadway My Way" cd. It's a beautiful arrangement and she sounds incredible.
I'd love her to do a concert staging of this...not sure it would translate well to a full-on stage show, but she'd sing the hell outta that score!
Added to the fact that she's far too old for the role, her voice also has an awfully mature, dark, heavy tone for that score - it would be kinda like hearing Deborah Voigt as Maria in West Side Story.
Better roles, I think, would be Mrs. Maurrant in Street Scene, Vanessa in Vanessa, Regina in Regina, dramatic soprano stuff like that. And definitely adult roles, not ingenues. Even better - get someone to write her a new role, like a musical of Beloved, with McDonald as Sethe. Or in a lighter vein, perhaps Amanda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada.
