Seth MacFarlane is a really good crooner, but something about him makes me want to deck him...
I'll never deny Ariana Grande's voice, either, but her acting in Hairspray left so much to be desired that I wouldn't mind if she stuck to making albums...

She may have pipes but I can never understand a word she sings.

That's part of the charm, personally. Who is this girl belting with marbles in her mouth? I can't explain it, but I love it -- lyrics aren't nearly as important in pop music as they are in musicals, since they're made to be listened to a bunch of times.
Admittedly, after watching this it does seem pretty ridiculous you can barely understand her.

I may be misremembering this, but, during 13, all the buzz I heard was surrounding her.
Then I saw the show and could not understand why. I didn't understand one thing she sang. At the time, I figured it was her age, but clearly not. By the way, Allie Trimm was, by far, the star of that show and left everyone else in the dust.

I'm too old for this sh*t. I liked Seth, but GD Ariana annoys the crap out of me with all those runs. She does have a voice, she doesn't need to oversing to show it off!

It looks like a dad taking his daughter to school. Seth always sounds the same and when he's not singing standards, it makes it seem like he's mocking the material for some reason. I have no trouble understanding Ariana. If anything, she's using more of her "theater" voice and less of her "pop" voice.
They both seemed nervous and like they weren't connecting. I don't know if he hit a speed bump, but whatever that moment was, it broke the tension. No one would ever cast either of them in these parts anyway so it was a fun chance to hear them sing it.

I didn't expect it to be THAT awkward to watch. I also think Seth Macfarlane can't help but look like he's always mocking things even when he's not. He just has that face and voice. Apple taking over carpool karaoke sort of takes all the personality out.

He's not a good fit for the song and clearly struggling. She seems conscious of that and is paying too much attention trying to stay with him. The distraction of driving makes it worse.
If they kept her in check with the riffing, I'd be curious to see her take on Audrey. I agree she's not the best actress, but that could work for the role.

Maybe I'm taking crazy pills, or maybe Ariana just doesn't have me as jaded as some of you, but that actually made me want to see her do Audrey. I actually think that was pretty solid (and pretty far away from her pop personality voice). Yes she riffed at the end, but she can reel that in for an actual show.

She's got pipes but should be allowed no where near a Broadway stage until she buries the hatchet with enunciation and breaks up with unnecessary vocal runs.

I agree. Ariana an incredible voice but has no idea how to use it properly. I wonder if she has a vocal coach.

I disagree. I think the actress playing Audrey needs to be seriously good with great comic timing and yet able to display real emotional depth. I'm not saying Ariana Grande with good direction can't do it, just that I think you do need a good actress for Audrey.
