It is a publicity stunt. Nothing more. Nothing less.

Wow. Didn't expect such reactions.
I was just curious if this bothered anyone because I felt it made Q look desperate from a marketing standpoint.
But then again,...Avenue Q is no stranger to playing the marketing desperation game.
It's a discussion thread... no need to attack people and their opinions.
I 'think' it does give fodder for the 'crazy extremists' though.
But whatever. It'll be forgotten until the next marketing move.

You know--I do recall the great outrage and scandal and damage that fell upon marriage after Kermit & Miss Piggy got married. Horrifying.
Whether or not there was a press agenda to Avenue Q or Hair's events, I do not doubt for one moment that the bulk of the inspiration was genuine. Genuine celebration for this landmark moment.
Unless you know the people involved in these events (and, I do), don't presume to know their intentions.
I think some people are a little upset that Nikky is off the market.
Now we're clearly crossing the line! Allowing same sex puppets to wed...what are we teaching your children?
It's the end of the world...

Things can be both. They can be gestures of good will that also get the shows' names out there. In Hair's case, I don't think there was a single member of original revival cast who's bio didn't mention marriage equality. It seems appropriate to celebrate this summer of love. Once again folks are using the either/or binary where it's not required.
As for Rod and Ricky, I'm pretty sure they'd be the first to say if you can take a puppeteer's fist up your butt, you can take a joke.

Honestly, how can you say that this is not adorable?
I guess I will cry at anything. lol
I guess this kind of follows the "there's no such thing as a good deed" arguement. There are some who feel that no matter how altruistic your intentions are you still get something from every noble act. A tax write off/gift from a charity, good PR, or even just the good feeling that follows. You always get something from the charitable act.
Personally, I found both Hair and Avenue Q's events to be heartfelt and lovely. As others have said it rings true with Avenue Q's PR from the very beginning. I loved it.
I've always loved Avenue Q's in character marketing (The London Cast blogs, the murder mystery (great idea, average execution), the election, etc.) I support this marriage 100%, and would like to see more videos of the puppets tackling other news headlines (maybe get the original creators re-involved...the actors have proved to be subpar sketch writers.) My only problem is the whole wedding thing is a spoiler to those who have not seen the show.

My god, what a narrow little view you have on things, dude.
Yes, it's fun.
It's also marketing.
Just chill, okay? Go find some thread about Lupone and post something. You'll feel much better.

It just seems kind of forced...let me explain...IIRC, Rod has JUST come out of the closet, and the joke is that his first "boyfriend", who he has just met, is this Chelsea muscleguy clone....it's a big leap from that to, um...marriage...
I don't find it offensive or anything. If Princeton and Kate were the ones getting married, it wouldn't offend anyone. If straight puppets can marry, so can gay puppets.
Who cares?!

But... they're puppets.
rougeduck, I don't think this will spoil anything for too many. I figure a lot of people who are seeing the show now don't follow these things. And those that do, for the most part, probably already know about the characters or have seen the show before.
I'm very happy for them, but a little curious if this full pledged commitment to a "monogamous" relationship will prevent them both from allowing other guys to . . .um . . . put their hands up certain places nightly????
Patash, Rod just got a new hand up his "certain place" a few weeks ago!
See? That's what I mean. I'm not sure it says a whole lot for the true commitment that a GOOD gay marriage should take.
Plus, there's the added issue that it's difficult for them to... uhm... stay erect, as it were, *without* someone putting their hand... uhm... up there.
... and sometimes the cartoons just write themselves...

Like that never happens. Have you never met lesbian couples?
