'Avenue Q' Moves To The Avenue

Cameron Macintosh has confirmed that he will move the show to Shaftesbury Avenue to the Gielgud.
Expect a very clever publicity launch for it very soon- I've just seen it and it is very clever!

re: 'Avenue Q' Moves To The Avenue

Im both pleased and little annoyed, pleased that a great show is staying around, annoyed because I was going to Avenue Qs last night, and now its not! lol

although I dont think all the current cast will be going with it, but im not 100% sure on that

re: 'Avenue Q' Moves To The Avenue

Glad to hear business picked up enough at the Coward to warrant the move.

It'll be nice to see another decent musical taking up residency on the Avenue

re: 'Avenue Q' Moves To The Avenue

I hear this is for a final limited run prior to Witches of Eastwick heading back in Sept?

re: 'Avenue Q' Moves To The Avenue

It's where he wants it since seeing it in Wimbledon and taking it on there and then, so impressed was he with it!.
But things are a little slow in getting the company back together for a transfer. Its Marty or no show basically!
All very quiet at the moment.
I guess if he actually has one of his shows in there and 'Witches' does come together it will be easier for him to take out a show of his own.

re: 'Avenue Q' Moves To The Avenue

I think he wanted it in there more or less straight after after the tour closed from what I understand but it seems Marty and a few others want a little summer break. From what I understand it will take a two-three month break and relaunch for the West End in Sept/Oct. Also this may give time to re-cast some roles and Cameron will want to probably spend more time on marketing/selling the show successfully, we all know how hands on he is!

I guess having AvQ in there to fill the time will mean Cameron can evict anytime, the running cost is low... but moving a show is quite expensive regardless - then again it's not such a massive set to shift.

re: 'Avenue Q' Moves To The Avenue

A little more money will be thrown at it for a transfer anyway.
I thought it looked amazing. A lot of money had gone into that production for a touring show that, in the beginning, never thought about the possibility of coming to town.
I was in Wimbledon the night Cameron's people were there and they went crazy for it. He saw it the following night and took it on straight away.

re: 'Avenue Q' Moves To The Avenue

Now the question is whether the current cast will transfer with the show. Am I the only one who thinks it would be a smart move to bring back the original London cast, now that would give a boost to ticket sales

re: 'Avenue Q' Moves To The Avenue

With the problems and backstage cat fights they had ........I don't think so!
Nice idea tho, I love Ms Arnaz.

I was going to say I doubt those three will rejoin. The three witches at the moment I think are great

re: 'Avenue Q' Moves To The Avenue

Was referring to Avenue Q of course, sorry for the confusion

re: 'Avenue Q' Moves To The Avenue

Thought Avenue would go on a UK tour, yet another show cheap to produce and can be effective on tour.

re: 'Avenue Q' Moves To The Avenue

Mama it was my thread a couple of weeks ago that predicted this.

I seem to remember some whipper-snapper casting doubt then, and you kindly set them straight. :)

I have my sources... HP, tomato etc...

re: 'Avenue Q' Moves To The Avenue

There's one member of the original cast who definitely won't be going back to the Avenue.

I would much rather have a tour than a transfer. I have tickets for the 28th... ah well, still love the show, not going to complain!

re: 'Avenue Q' Moves To The Avenue

Could you provide proof of this?

I've seen no press release or anything of that sort.

Because it's not out there just yet if you read my original post!!!!!
Finishing touches being done at the moment!

re: 'Avenue Q' Moves To The Avenue

I still don't see WHY Calendar Girls didn't just take the Gielgud. I remember my tickets for Little Shop were changed easy enough when they announced the move from the Duke Of Yorks to Ambassadors so moving tickets for a show that hasn't even opened yet would have been easier.

That said, I am glad Avenue Q is staying open and hoping the new location brings in New Life.

BUT the advance will not not be very good and it will lose people who went for "the last time to see it again".
Touring this show would be the best option.

re: 'Avenue Q' Moves To The Avenue

It would do GREAT on tour, so many people keep asking me at the palace when Avenue Q is coming, more than they do Wicked

The only problem with Touring this show is that it would get lost in a theatre the size of ours or the Birmingham Hippodrome etc
Namo i love u but we get it already....you don't like Madonna

re: 'Avenue Q' Moves To The Avenue

Exactly what I was thinking, songanddanceman.
If it did a similar sort of tour to Little Shop at the moment, I can see it working well.

re: 'Avenue Q' Moves To The Avenue

I wasn't over impressed with the Witches Tour. some of the choices and changes made were a mess, but then some were better. I wasn't keen on Mr Pellow either- and i especially wasnt fond on the witches! Well, i liked Ria Jones but that was it. HOWEVER if this is what it takes to get it back into town then Im thrilled.... just throw a bit more cash at it please!

Oh, and Ave Q moving will be fun im sure... they will do something wacky im sure!

re: 'Avenue Q' Moves To The Avenue

Really pleased to see that this is transferring rather than closing. IMO it's one of the top half dozen musicals in the West End.
