Vibrato, that's the word I was looking for! I don't know if it's because the actor was worked up in the scene or what, but it just didn't seem to stop shaking throughout the song.
But hey they must have had some good performers to get all the attention they got in L.A.
If Bare ran along enough and they had to replace the actors, I wonder how I'd react?
Wow....definitely an ewww! I mean, it's ok....but definitely no Michael!
I thank the Bare gods for finding Michael! LOL
Didn't like the different lyrics, but I actually really liked the different orchestrations....
So much activity on the thread! How can I possibly drool over my new diving boyfriend Alexandre Despatie and keep up with you guys?!
I just listened to the L.A version of "Role of a Lifetime" and I agree with you guys. Vocally he's no Michael though I did read good things about him. And the lyrics are so much better now.
And OT, but Trisky, I just got confirmation for Jeremy Kushnier's concert and Altar Boyz! Umm... we're going to see The Woman Upstairs and Jeremy in the same night.
*thud*
Oh 2Day, seriously Alexandre Despatie, the Canadian diver is to die for. And thank you Jebus for small diving speedos.
Oh Canada.
Yes, those Canadians, they're so hot.
passes out from all the vocal glory on 9/23!
OMG, Ephiphany from L.A. is... much better in NY. LOL
Did anyone get the new Advocate with Damon/Jon featured?
I thought Epiphany was new to New York (or was that "Wedding Bells"?). What does it sound like, Trisky?
I think it was Wedding Bells. The bulk of Ephiphany is actually the same, there are some different orchestrations and different lyrics (I think Claire's lines are actually funnier in the L.A. version). I get the sense that the L.A. version of the show lacked a lot of the subtlety of the NY version. It's very, very broad, from what I've heard so far.
WOW! I can't miss a moment of this thread!
I may just pick up "At Swim, Two Boys." Blue suggested and I agreed that I should wait until college to fully take the novel in, but I feel left out
The LA cast is so surreal...imagine how weird it will be for us to see replacements! (GASP!) The old logo...ehh, the new logo, ehhh-er. They need something original.
I listened to all of Act 2 at the beach today...wow. I got chills in 90 degree weather. The end sequence of "Promise" to "No Voice" never fails to make me tear up. Even if I try not to tear up, it always gets to me.
Michael has some voice, I don't have the words for it.
Oh! Took more random pictures at the beach today, but I was next to a lifeguard stand so I didn't want them thinking I was taking pictures of them. Or was I? Hmmm, I was distracted by green speedos
LOL - it's still all see, no touch.
Here's a contest for us: who can design the best BARE poster/logo! I can't use Photoshop for the life of me, so I'll just stand and be in awe of everyone else's design talents.
(I suggest not using cast photos a la current logo, but something wholly original!)
I love Plain Jane Fat Ass and am a little hopeful that it finds its way back into the show although it is a little harsh!
Oh god, they should absolutely bring this song back! I like it 100 times more than Love, Dad. I suppose they took it out because it's more about Nadia and less about Jason and their relationship, but ... I literally laughed out loud.
The Jason in L.A. is pretty good. I like John Hill more, but their voices are pretty similar. However, I don't particularly care for the L.A. Peter. No, let me amend that, I *really* don't care for the L.A. Peter. To quote the N.Y. Sr. Chantelle "what's with the warble"?
Did Aaron Lohr ever play a version of Matt in L.A. before it hit the stage? Either that's him or he and the L.A. Matt are vocal twins.
I am slightly amused that the one song that I think is the weakest "Portrait of a Girl" is the one song that hasn't changed a lyric. I also like the setup for Ivy with this song in the L.A. version more, that she was the one who drew the sketches and was trying to get some attention for it.
The show is definitely a LOT more subtle now.
Ick... no I do not like L.A. Peter, not at all. Thank goodness for Michael Arden.
where can I go to listen to the london cast?
LOL, Spider, it's the Los Angeles cast (LA).
Why does the LA "God Don't Make No Trash" sound like a country square dance number? LOL!
Steering off-topic a bit, I finally heard "Slut Chorus Boy", and I absolutely LOVE it! Besides being hilarious and deliciously vulgar, it has the catchiest melody and arrangement ever! I can't get enough of it, it has such an addictive hook. And Scott Allgauer is hysterical and amazing. I don't know why someone hasn't given this man his own show!
Ooops. hehehe. I am tired, my brain doesn't work right now. Anywho, is there anywhere for me to listen to some clips of them?

There's no possible way I can go through all of these threads (impressive, guys) but where did you guys get the recordings you're talking about (I don't mean LA or the sampler) because I would kill for them, lol.
BW, how'd you get to hear Slut Chorus Boy??? I'm totally dying to hear it... it sounds hilarious.
Listening to the L.A. cast now and I don't like the guy who plays Jason at all. And seriously it's not just the not-Johnness. He is really theatrical sounding which just doesn't work.
And this Peter is so not Michael Arden. 'Nuff said about that.
And I don't even like the Plain Jane Fat Ass song. Maybe I'm crazy but I didn't think it was funny or smart.
Thank God the lyrics have been re-worked so much.
And the guy who plays Matt has to be Aaron!
I'm trying to figure out how this version of Bare became such a hit. I'm not sure I would have fallen as hard for this as I have for the New York incarnation.
It also helps to have Michael, John, Jenna and company here in New York. That's a lot of talent, yo.
ETA: Okay, just finished Once Upon a Time and it was actually pretty good. He's still not John but this wasn't horrible.
Grrrrr....I have to move onto campus today, so I can't sit down and listen to LA yet....makes me wanna cry....*tear*
AGH! LA Peter...he's okay. Too much vibrato, and it's not even consistent vibrato. Very warbly and untrained. He's okay I guess. Michael sings it much less effort, and overall much nicer.
"Slut Chorus Boy?" HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA !!!

It was the Plain Jane Fat Ass in me that really enjoyed Plain Jane Fat Ass! It helped that I don't think Love, Dad is very strong, or rather that it's placement in the show seems very out of nowhere. At least with PJFA it makes sense to follow up on Nadia's disappointment at not having been cast as Juliet (and it's also a spiritual/tonal twin to Spring, which is good consistency). But I can see where they thought they needed to give Jason more to do in that exchange between them, to establish him as a character.
And the guy who plays Matt has to be Aaron!
Seriously, that must be him and if it's not that's really quite amazing that the voices match so well. I know he didn't perform it in L.A. but he may have done the workshop.

Well to be fair, it's only Act I and as we know even in NY, Act II is 1,000 times more emotionally involving. I can't really say what my reaction would have been to this Bare without the bias of having seen the NY version/cast. It may have been just new and different enough that I would have loved it just the same. I may have even loved L.A. Peter. Okay maybe not... :P
ETA: Okay, just finished Once Upon a Time and it was actually pretty good. He's still not John but this wasn't horrible.
Yes, that's what I was mostly basing my reaction to him on. I wonder if he's like John, needing certain songs to really shine on. In the way we say not to judge John from the 11 song sampler, it may be the case with him. All that said, thank you John for taking the role because I adore you less than MoG, but still adore you lots and a hell of a lot more than L.A. Jason!
Oh and Once Upon a Time in Act 1? So bizarre to hear it there.
Okay, I am sooo happy that some people from the board finally had the chance to listen to the LA cast, to get some discussion on it going!! When I first heard it, it took a really long time for me to get used to, but after a while it really grew on me, and then when I would hear the NY version I would be all messed up and start signing the LA version, so I try not to listen to LA as much any more.
Trisky, I could not agree with you more on your reaction to the LA cast lyric changes, I do think that the LA version has some really great spoken words that seemed to have been cut from NY, that really help with some of the character development, and there are a few lines that I am really attached to that were cut, I am just hoping that when it comes back in Oct. there are not more lines that i have to let go of, especially in Ever After, I hope they just leave this one perfect as is!!

I defintley thought that the LA Matt HAS TO be Aaron, if they are not the same they DO sound exactly alike, I would love to know for sure!!
Hey Trisky, have I ever mentioned how much I love you?
