I went again last night to see if anything’s changed (it hadn’t) and I’m more shocked than anything that they still don’t let that poor lady change out of her hospice clothes for the curtain call.
Early previews I said how the book for a good portion of act one is actually pretty funny and campy in parts but damn, last night it was NOT funny anymore. Whether they removed the jokes or were told to tone it down, this show DRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGED. The dude next to me was on his phone for a good part of the show and I didn’t even mind because it meant i could always glance over and check the time.
As much as I hated the score last time, I hated it even more this time. Theres not a single song in this musical I would ever choose to listen to again on a cast recording. None of these songs will be sung by anyone serious at even a cabaret show unless the theme is “Songs You Don’t Want To Hear”. And that nightmare fever dream with all six CeeCee’s and Bertie’s at the wedding is just as jaw dropping as ever.
There’s not a single thing in this show that works. I know in 2026 you have to say “but the cast is amazing” and i mean, they’re all talented of course but they can’t out perform this dire show. Vosk is hilarious sure but this Cee Cee is so unlikable and such a bitch that you really wonder why anyone would be her “Best”. (And who the hell says “she’s my best”? God, that’s awful.)
Still amazing that after an entire decade, this is the final product.
