BEACHES Previews — Page 9

Are the rumors really saying it’s planning to close later this month? I’d like to catch it in May, but it doesn’t sound like it’ll make it
Posted: 4/9/26 at 11:59pm
Yeah, I understand that the show will be closed in the next three weeks so if you want to see it, see now... I would love to know if any of the actors are still decorating or moving stuff into their dressing room.
Any word if Bette would be attending the opening? They really need some press even association.

If I had to guess, Bette (and Shaiman) have no interest in seeing this, and attending on Opening would be a big distraction. At this point it also wouldn’t help the show at all.

They have zero involvement in this production, though the musical obviously uses various visual elements of the film adaptation, which Midler produced. None of Shaiman’s work is used in the musical, so there’s that.

Think I can show up at half hour and still score a general rush ticket?

Oh Beaches....
Everyone wanted the film on stage, not whatever the f*ck that was. If you couldn't secure the rights....why bother? Many on this board wisely predicted this would be a disaster and yet, after Canada, you still wasted 20 million+ dollars? Why? This won't ever be successful.
When your stand outs are, like, 8 years old when it's not children's theater? You've got a problem. Zeya and Samantha are both stars, and considering the "sets", I think the kids were responsible for creating those as well? And was I dreaming or did every single scene end in an abrupt blackout? "Why God Why?"
This musical is borderline unwatchable and sadly the sales reflect it. The incredibly tepid response from the audience was very depressing as well. I overheard a woman say "I was comped and it was still too expensive". The entire cast is very talented, but this should never be on another stage, anywhere, ever again. It will be closed by May so see it now if you truly wish. The nearly empty theater for tomorrow night's performance is just awful to see. Heartbroken for the hard-working people on stage looking out to 25% houses, in previews. I can't imagine doing that, although I'm sure many people on here absolutely can and have experienced this. Brutal.

So, this really is going to close right after it opens. Look at any date in the next few weeks and each show has ~100 tickets sold. This has to be considered one of the biggest flops of this decade.

I'm surprised they are waiting until it opens. What a waste of money.

Make of this what you will, but I heard a similar remark in the bathroom line last night at the opening of DEATH OF A SALESMAN. Sophisticated plays aren’t for everyone…

I believe it has to open to be able to qualify for the Tony Awards. Whatever helps it to secure licensing rights for regional and community theaters.

Was watching CBS Sunday Mornings and the commercial for Beaches was advertising it as a "limited engagement". Guess they'll announce the closing shortly after opening.

Exactly."
Hint: if someone leaves an entirely negative post, as that person did, that is not shilling, and they are certainly not a shill.

I’m not saying it won’t close early (obviously), but it was always a limited engagement.

most new musicals have ticket sales available through Sept. 6 only. None of them are advertising themselves as a "limited engagement".

But this production of Beaches was always a limited engagement followed by a tour from the very beginning.

It never made sense to me to tout a limited engagement while putting 6 months of tix on sale. Just lie about it and start with 15 weeks, then announce an extension post-opening if there is actual demand. (Which I assume TITANIQUE is about to do.)

Yeah, this production was always announced as closing September 6th and then a tour.
Too bad they won’t make it through May.

Aiming for May 3 as closing date?

The deadline for shows to qualify for 2026 Tony Awards consideration is April 26, 2026 and BEACHES opens April 22, 2026 and the nominations are announced on May 5, 2026 so they can easily close on May 6, 2026 if they are ignored at the Tony Awards with no nominations. If Vosk or Barrett are nominated, they might hang on a little longer hoping those nominations induce ticket sales.

I'll guess and say May 17. The following weekend is Memorial Day weekend.

I really hope Jessica's next project is a big successful hit. She really deserves the best material out there. For me, she's surpassed ShoBean and Megan as my overall favorite Broadway performers out there.
