After a long, twisting developmental process, a musical adaptation of Beaches takes up space tomorrow (March 27) at the Majestic Theatre. The uplifting, tear-jerking “love story about friendship” is based on the Iris Rainer Dart novel and the 1988 Bette Midler-Barbara Hershey film; Jessica Vosk and Kelli Barrett lead the 12-person cast as besties Cee Cee and Bertie. Beaches features an original score by Mike Stoller and Dart (yes, “Wind Beneath My Wings” is also included), with a book by Dart and Thom Thomas, choreography by Jennifer Rias, and direction by Lonny Price and Matt Cowart. Opening night is April 22 for a run through September 6; a national tour is expected to follow.
“This sweeping story follows the vivacious Cee Cee and elegant Bertie, who meet as children and form an unshakeable bond. Over the course of their 30-year friendship, these unlikely soulmates find joy, humor, and heartbreak in a pour-your-heart-out production that’s made to be shared.”
