"BETTE MIDLER TO TAKE 'HELLO, DOLLY!' TO THE WEST END IN 2019"

This is where The King and I is right now, right? Somehow, the size and thrust of the stage made that production seem amateur, and I think given the range of productions that have been in that theatre (heck I saw a live Whose Line there not too long ago), the audience treats everything there like pantomine, which really makes everything worse and kind of gives an immature vibe. Hard to explain, I just never find it an impressive professional theatre.

Well I suppose it was traditionally a theatre of variety which might explain why some would view it that way, but to be fair there have been a lot of large scale musicals there over the years which have been very well received.

The current model of having a big musical for a limited run during the summer, a panto at christmas and concerts/events in between suits it quite well. I imagine Hello Dolly would be quite a nice fit.

given that you have to ask if this is the theatre where The King And I is playing implies you are not that familiar with one of the worlds great theatres. I have seen many and varied shows there and the audience reacts according to the show. They did not boo the villain in Showboat or expect Yul Brynner to throw sweets in The King and I. They didn’t expect a song sheet in A Chorus Line or hiss the Nazis in The Sound of Music.

Oddly enough I haven’t seen a pantomime there, but I imagine the audience act appropriately for a pantomime.

Your generalised comments are inaccurate - certainly based on my many experiences there.
