They will sell rush tickets as long as there are empty seats left to sell for that performance. The Shubert is huge. You should have no trouble getting a rush seat any time within two hours prior to curtain.
Just as an update, my friends and I (there were 3 of us) got to the theater about ten minutes before 12pm yesterday (getting tickets for the matinee) and there were maybe 6 people waiting before us. We got row F center balcony seats.

For Blithe Spirit, I think it's best to come closer to curtain time. At least that's what I've heard from friends who've done it, on weeknights or weekends.

The balcony seats are really good. It's high up, but is very close to the stage... the facial expressions were very easy to see.
Yeah, I was fine with the balcony. We were in the center which was really nice and I felt like I could still see everything well. The set was absolutely gorgeous!
I remember reading somewhere on here that they release the Blithe Spirit premium seats for regular sale about and hour before the performance. Since they sell all empty seats for rush, it would be beneficial to go later rather than sooner, no?
The balcony isn't as bad as I thought. I also got row F center balcony. The only problem is the rake of the seats. If the person in front of you leans forward at all, you're screwed.
I would like to take 2 people, overage, to see this show using rush. Would I be able to buy a 3rd ticket at regular price alongside the 2 rush tickets? I've never tried that before.
Also, I am mighty confused about it being better to rush right before curtain. It just does not seem to make sense.
I think I will investigate this on Tuesday by dropping by the box office around 6, 6:30 and seeing the quality of tickets.

I saw the show yesterday with RUSH in the balcony and it was not bad at all. I was able to see the entire stage and it was quite a nice. 26.50 seats 2 hours before the show.
Rudy2, Broadway tickets aren't sold best seats first. They're sold worst seats first, with the best seats being held for premium or full price until the last hour or so. When unsold premium or full price seats are released, they are often made available for rush price, or any price -- TKTS, discount codes -- just so those seats can be filled.
^ Thank you, that answers my question.
I have another though. Is it possible to get 2 rush tickets and buy a third for at regular price for most productions? Is this frowned upon?

I don't think that would be frowned upon at all. They would be selling another ticket. That's a good thing. I don't know, however, if they can input it into the system to find three seats together with two of them being at rush price and one at regular price. You'd have to ask the box office that.
So if I was to rush tomorrow's matinee (which is at 2pm), would it be advisable to be there at midday or closer to curtain?
I'm planning on rushing today for the matinee. I am going to something at noon. Is there any chance they will sell me a ticket before hand?
Also where have the seats been lately?
I rushed last Wednesday for the matinee, got there at about 12:30 or 1:00, and got front row balcony all the way on the side. The seat was perfectly fine, except that I had to lean around the lights occasionally, but I think if I had waited longer, I may have gotten a better seat, although the house looked pretty full.
Hrm, you got there at 1 o clock and still got Balcony? I'm very confused then. What is the optimal time to get there to receive the best seats possible?
I showed up for a Wednesday matinee, just yesterday - May 6, 2009 - about 10 minutes prior to curtain, and got Row C, center mezzanine. KILLER seat.
All the seats in the row that were to my left - about 10 seats - were empty. However, all the rows behind me were filled.
I'm guessing they save seats in this row for rush? Anybody have a similar experience?
Has anyone rushed a weekend performance, especially a matinee? I'd be very interested in finding out the quality of seats. I'm very interested in taking my mom and a friend to see the show - of course, paying full price for one of our 3 tickets.

I got to the box office Wednesday at noon and got 1st row. There were 2 empty seats beside me.

Yes, I was on the left side 1 seat in from the aisle. Great view as the stage is not that high.
Lucky you!
