I really don't see it doing well in the barn that is the St. James, but we shall see...
The St. James is NOT a barn. It's a beautiful, historic theatre.
Sorry, I get defensive about my favorite theatres.
I saw this just a couple weeks ago. It is semi-enjoyable fluff, that's about it. And, yes, it is very very different from the movie; the plot is the same only in the broadest sense.
Does seem like a strange schedule. But I'm excited to see it. Has a lot of Broadway names on the creative side, so that should add some heft to it.
A lot of old Summer Stock Theatres were Barns.
Very excited to see this.
Sorry not have called the young lady the fat girl, sadly can't remember her name. But she is the best thing about the show! Steals every scene she is in, adds the humour and warmth that is sorely lacking for the main leads.
She is the main reason to see the show and the best thing about it....

So what does this mean for the shows eligibility for the Tony Awards, inviting voters aside? It's hard to see them honoring a national tour that is basically making a stop on Broadway.
Wouldn't it fall into the category of things like the Menken Christmas Carol, Elf etc? Or is it possibly going for an open run?
I don't have a great desire to see this, but the three song sampler released aren't... awful, and while I'm often down on projects like this, I think it has more originality and talent behind it than a number of shows that have come recently, so I don't see any objection.

The national tour of Hair (the 2009 Broadway Revival version) was eligible for Best Revival of a musical this year. Which, ironically, stopped at the St James Theatre as well. I believe the production just has to be in a Broadway theatre to be considered eligible for Tony's. I could be wrong, but I believe I'm correct
No, that actually makes a lot of sense--thanks.
As for theatre size, I've never been to the St James, but as mentioned, this has been touring to regional theatres which quite often are more "barn like" than Broadway houses--and I think it's a pretty bigproduction to take advantage of that (not elaborate sets really but big sports score screens, etc) so it probably makes sense for them not to have to downscale for a short stop at a smaller theatre. Though it probably amounts more to what is available.
Hair was not eligible for Best Revival this year because it had not been 3 years since the production at the Hirschfeld closed. Also, they didn't invite the voters because it was unlikely that any of the actors (the only eligible element) would have been nominated.
Don't judge the show by the song sampler. I love the song "It's All Happening," but the other songs choices were weird. Especially, "Enjoy The Trip" which was one of the worst songs in the show in my opinion. I think the show is better than you can tell from the song sampler.
I believe the production just has to be in a Broadway theatre to be considered eligible for Tony's [sic].
Not exactly. A show has to invite Tony voters to at least 8 performances (I believe) or, if it doesn't run for 8 performances, at least half. It also has to be a new production that was not on Broadway within the last three years, which is why HAIR was not eligible this year. HUGH JACKMAN, BACK ON BROADWAY was not eligible for this year's Tonys because the producers chose not to invite the voters.
Then there are occasionally productions that are not in a Broadway house that can petition to be eligible. I don't know the last time this happened, but occasionally shows at City Center or Radio City Music Hall have been in the mix.
The 1995 revival of Hello, Dolly was a tour that stopped on Broadway and was nominated for Best Revival of a Musical.
And keep in mind, the Manuel hip-hop numbers only represent half the score. The way the score was divided between the two composers was a genius move on the part of the creative team, though I think Manuel provides the stronger and more memorable material.
So ENCORES could be up for Tonys if they petitioned for it?
I saw both this and Leap of Faith in LA. Faith was by far the better show.
Saw the show in Chicago and it really surprised me. I loved it. And, the cast is really terrific. Excited for everyone involved and looking forward to seeing it again in New York!
I give the show a 7 out 10. I had fun, but it's nothing to write home about, nor do I think it will get ANY attention from the TONY's outside of Choreography.
The villain will hopefully be played by a different actress. The one I saw in LA was LOST LIKE A CHILD in the role. Nothing she did worked. Whether that was her fault, or the writing/direction remains to be seen, however I thought she was god awful.
The lead girl was only 20 and killed it every moment she was on stage. I was in awe. So impressed. Young hard working talent that deserves to be seen.
The score is a solid 5 out of 10. Lin's songs are like bad knocks off of HEIGHTS music, and it's obvious that when he is out of ideas he makes them go "WHOA OH OH." Something that also happens quite a lot in HEIGHTS.
The Lepprachaun scene is VERY funny and will make you laugh. The best moments of the shows are with the "ethnic" crowd. Their musical staging/vocals are stellar and made me feel alive. The cross dresser was also FANTASTIC, great performance.
I was dissapointed with the ending routines (though they were exceptional). I guess I just longed for more stunts. But I understand the limits of a theater stage. It was still all impressive.
I had fun. I laughed. I wouldn't pay top dollar. I'm happy for the cast.
I'm looking forward to seeing Teddy Toye on the Broadway stage again. I know I'm in the vanishingly small minority, but I liked Lysistrata Jones a lot and he was one of my favorites.
Considering the talent attached to this show, I was fairly disappointed in it. The cheerleading choreography is amazing, but that's about it. Except for two brief rap sections, all the songs sounded like the same generic pop. The show definitely has the built-in audience for the movie, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and even Tom Kitt, but I don't see it becoming a huge hit.
