Bandstand coming to movie screens in June!

Hmm, just checking out upcoming movies and noticed Bandstand is showing in late June, but I never recall hearing about it on here, so looks like it is happening... albeit there is no trailer, artwork, or text on any of these pages, just the title and date.

Seth Rudetsky has mentioned that Bandstand was filmed and will be coming to theatres several times recently on "On Broadway" so it seems like it is known about in the industry but not really the public.

I have no qualms about BANDSTAND being presented in HD, but why haven't productions of CURIOUS INCIDENT or Bradley Cooper's ELEPHANT MAN been given the same treatment?

I was there the night they were filming. So glad that this will be seen by more people, it was wonderful with brilliant performances!

Neither one of those are musicals. Musicals are seen in movie theaters. Straight plays would make no money. They belong on PBS, not in large theaters.

It’s actually coming back as well. I don’t remember the date, but it is in June or July.

I was not aware of that, I retract my statement. The majority of theatrical productions shown in movie theaters are musicals, though.

I have not! Thank you for that information. I just recall Newsies, Falsettos, Memphis, Les Miserables, etc being in movie theaters. How little I knew. Thanks again!

Hope they show this in Canada. I noticed they are also showing the off broadway show Puffs in theatres but unforunately not here in Toronto.

On the positive side, we did get screenings of Newsies and Falsettos! I would have loved to see Memphis as well. It was the first Broadway show I ever saw in NY. My first ever at home was Miss Saigon. Ah memories!

Here in Canada they show a lot of our Stratford festival productions of mostly Shakespeare - Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, and Hamlet have been show recently on the big screen. We also get the National Theatre productions so a large number of plays as well as the Shakespeare. I also saw Curious Incident.

The filmed performance was how I first saw Memphis. Loved it

Elephant Man was filmed? In London I'm assuming? Where is it available to watch?

Thanks for this thread. I’m looking forward to Bandstand and am thrilled that Curious Incident is coming back. I generally enjoy these filmed productions almost as much as the real thing; it’s a gift to be able to see original casts with perfect sound and frequent closeups to capture what’s otherwise easy to miss on stage.

My only complaint is that is that it’s so easy to miss that these things are happening. There’s never any publicity locally (at least where I’m looking) and the emails get lost in all the useless chatter that arrives everyday. My only real source is this board and I thank you guys for that. It’s a shame because our our local theaters would be more apt to book these things if more people attended, but that’s not going to happen if no one knows they’re here.

I agree! I live in NYC so it does make it easier to get wind of these things, but I have friends who don't live here and wouldn't know these special things were going on without either myself giving a heads up or stalking these boards :) These things should be more publicized for sure! PBS does a good job though.

Thrilled to see this news! I missed the show by only a few weeks when I was in NYC last fall, so I'm so happy to have the chance to see it in some way.

I'm not very knowledgeable about the economics of the musical theater, but despite the organizations that produce musicals always looking for donations and holding fundraising galas, and despite sky-high ticket prices, only 20 percent of musicals recoup? Yet they sit on their most valuable asset, recordings of their most successful shows.

Wait a year after the show closes before releasing the DVD if necessary, but then aren't all sales just gravy?

I know. It probably has something to do with the unions.

They never say that in advance, since they want you to go see it in movie theaters first.
