As a performer, I pick Kristin.
When it comes to interpatations and singing it really depends on which role we are talking about. I prefer Barabra's Marian, but I do think they are pretty even in Candide. But, I would never have wanted to see Barabar Cook play Daisy in On A Clear Day and I would never want to see Kristin do Magnolia in Show Boat. It really depends on the type of role.

There is no comparison: Miss Cook, all the way.
Kristin's technique is, quite frankly, horrendous. for proof, watch how, in the candide concert she juts out her jaw very painfully whenever she tries to hit a high note. and when she does hit the high note, her vibrato is so off the wall that I really have to force myself not to fast forward. her "glitter and be gay" was not my favorite, either. just listen to Barbara sing that song with her soaring soprano on the cd, and you can't argue who is the better singer.
Kristin I like on other songs, like "this moment", but for me, it'll always be Barbara.
"Chenoweth has yet to prove herself as a real interpreter on songs."
I think her rendidtion of "Taylor, the Latte Boy" brings, a certain warmth, I've never heard other performers bring to a song before.
There is most definitely a right and wrong answer! The correct answer, is Barbara Cook. Kristin sounds too much like a cartoon character, to be the right answer. So, if you picked her, too bad; but you're wrong.
"Taylor, the Latte Boy" is not a song to judge a singers interpretive skills. There are no layers or depth to that song whatsoever.
As Barbara Cook is my Diva, I, of course, pick Barbara.
I just wonder if Kristin (or Idina or Sutton, et al.) will have the longevity that Barbara has.

Barbara Cook brings a depth of feeling and experience to her performances that few can touch. I don't get that from Chenoweth when I see/hear her perform.
My consistant issue with Chenoweth's performances is that, in spite of being an obvious talent, she seems to push her performances on the audience, rather than trusting the audience and bringing them in.
I remember listening to Barbara and Kristin's versions of Glitter and be Gay and when I heard Barbara sing it ,her vocal ability is so flexible and so pure ,she can do anything with that voice! When I heard Kristin sing it she was way too strong and pushing her vocal chords to the limit but she did sound shy with some of the high notes. But they both do the best job singing that song.
Barbara! She is classic!
I like them both.
Can that be my answer?
Or do I have to pick one?

I hear a lot of complaints about Chenoweth, but technique has never been one of them.
For those of you know, do you all agree with Pippin that her technique is horrendous? I'm really curious because I don't know much about singing/voice technique.
I know Chenoweth has her problems and I wish she'd trust the material more rather than constantly pushing the audience to feel a certain way, however, I'm starting to think that she is becoming really underrated on this board.
20th century soprano = Cook
21st century soprano = Chenoweth
