Ok all..I am about to take over the role of "Belle" in Beauty and the Beast for the month of April (Yes, I am the first cover) and I have a question for you all. Personally, I have never seen Beauty and the Beast (I am just IN it) and cannot answer my own question.
Is the number "Me" (between Gaston and Belle) supposed to be laugh out loud funny or is it just silly to watch but never really gets any laughs??
My current Belle and Gaston get ZERO reaction from the audience during the number despite the fact that both are Helen Hayes Award winners and greatly talented.
Is it supposed to be that way (silent?? Cricket...Cricket) or are they playing it wrong?
I want to get some kind of reaction from the audience but maybe I won't if that is how the number is normally received. I don't want to set myself up for a fall.
I think it isn't too good a number to begin with. I'd make it a campy style of humor.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Having the actors get more physical with the number may help. Belle's facial expressions should be over-exaggerated and comical. Hope that helps.
And you think of all of the things you've seen, and you wish that you could live in between ,and you're back again only different than before...

Maybe you should ask the people who are signing your paychecks...

Don't overdo it. This is Gaston's Number but it is a good chance for Belle to show the audience why Belle is not attracted to this Good Looking, Strong, Macho Guy. Cause she wants something different and Gaston is obviously more into Himself. Why isn't your Director helpin u with that? Where is your Production?
