Fred Mason said: "Commercial off broadway isn’t really a thing, any producer who thinks so is highly misguided. Yes I know there have been a few rare exceptions.
Titanique and dead outlaw come to Broadway after not selling off Broadway. Again, producers don’t bring their shows to Broadway thinking they will make money from any Broadway run. "
I should know better than to feed the troll, but I haven’t gotten around to blocking yet, so here goes.
TITANIQUE ran off Broadway for over a thousand performances. While it may not have made money, it lasted long enough to bolster the brand and lay the groundwork for international productions. DEAD OUTLAW was produced in partnership with Audible and, like many shows there (including MEXODUS), a slow start turned into a full fledged, sold out hit by the end of the run.
To say commercial off-Broadway isn’t a thing is also highly misguided. In recent years, you have HEATHERS, SPELLING BEE, and most notably LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS all having successful ongoing commercial runs. Hell, all of New World Stages are, to one extent or another, successful commercial runs.
