Bernadette Peters and "A Little Night Music"

Does anyone know when Bernadette Peters is leaving "A Little Night Music"?? I'd like to take my family there for Christmas vacation, and the only reason I want to go is too see her. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I don't know the answer to this but the show was fantastic and she is amazing in it. Everyone should go see it!

Another bump of support for the show. While the production is still far from perfect, it's one of the only times in 20+ years of theatergoing that I felt I was witnessing history. And the supporting cast is much improved as well! Go if at all possible.

I heard that she's "seriously considering" extending through January. Elaine has said that she will consider extending, depending upon how she's feeling when her contract is up. I guess if Bernadette decides to extend and Elaine doesn't, they can always just throw Karen Murphy in as Madame Armfeldt for the last weeks of the run (or until another cast is announced...though further replacements seem unlikely at this point).
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

I have no desire to see the 55-year-old Karen Murphy play Bernadette's mother. Plus her Madame Armfeldt is pretty mediocre.

There's no way they're going to change the marquee, photos, and all of the advertising to include the completely unknown Karen Murphy, who's not even very good as Madame Armfeldt anyway.

If Stritch decides not to extend, I suspect the show will close.

I'm inclined to think she will ultimately extend, mind you. She seems to be loving all of this attention she's getting.

Do you really believe that they would close the show if Stritch chose not to extend, even if Bernadette was willing to? That sounds a bit like putting the cart before the horse to me.

I think Stritch has said that her decision will rest on her health and stamina, rather than how much fun she's having. She's obviously in great shape, but eight shows a week for six months can still be exhausting.

Stritch's exact quote about extending was, "It will depend on a lot of things." She's a smart lady, and knows how to play hard to get. I suspect it's all posturing.

And yes, I think they'll either close or find a semi-name for the final two months, not promote Karen Murphy.

Well, they do seem to be promoting from the inside (Dean, Buntrock). I'd like to see vacation cover Alma Cuervo take the role.

I wouldn't blame her for leaving the ensemble to take on the role of Madame Armfeldt, but isn't Cuervo going to be in Women on the Verge?

When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain. -Kad

The understudies that were promoted did not replace names. No one cares if they're seeing Aaron Lazar or Bradley Dean as the Count. There's a reason CZJ and Angela weren't replaced by Jayne Paterson and Karen Murphy.

I completely forgot that Cuervo was involved in WOMEN ON THE VERGE. And for what it's worth, the last time I saw the show half the audience didn't know who Stritch was. She got barely any entrance applause and the woman behind me asked, "Is she famous?" They were coming to hear Bernadette sing "Send in the Clowns".

Half the audience? You surveyed them all?

And for what it's worth, each of the 4 times I've seen Stritch, she's gotten loud, enthusiastic entrance applause. One time, some matinee ladies were even discussing her at length, and how she used to be "a bitter woman."

Wow, isn't that interesting that different audiences have different people in them with different levels of knowledge of who Elaine Stritch is?

Still no news whether this enchanting production and wonderful performances will be recorded?
I really hope they film it. We need something to replace the dreadful film version of this excellent musical.

So people came to see Bernadette Peters and Elaine Stritch and didn't know who Elaine Stritch was? That makes no sense.

People don't go for the show, they go for the actor.

"So people came to see Bernadette Peters and Elaine Stritch and didn't know who Elaine Stritch was? That makes no sense."

Unless they are coming, as was stated, to see Bernadette. It is not unusual for only one of the billed stars to be the reason a person is going to see a show.

Bernadette Peters and 'A Little Night Music'

I had heard of Bernadette Peters, knew she was quite a big Broadway person, but hadn't really heard of Elaine Stritch. I went purely to see the show, as I had booked to see it in London but it closed before when I had tickets for.

Bernadette Peters and 'A Little Night Music'

When we set out to get tickets for ALNM, we knew who both Bernadette and Elaine were. But quite honestly, we were mostly gunning to see it so badly because of Bernadette. She's pretty much my friend's hero, so it made her day to see her idol live on stage.

Bernadette Peters and 'A Little Night Music'

I don't think it's necessary at all to enjoy it (at least, I haven't seen it, my parents who went to the musical with me didn't know anything about it besides "Send in the Clowns") and we all loved the show.
Give me claws and a hunch, just away from this bunch.

Bernadette Peters and 'A Little Night Music'

The show stands entirely on its own. It was written at a time when home video was still not a reality, thus Sondheim and Wheeler were not writing a musical that would depend upon knowledge and repeated viewings of the source material.

@AC126748, who states: I heard that she's "seriously considering" extending through January.

Where exactly did you "hear" this news? From her, her agent, from one of her friends, from a producer, from anyone famliar with her other commitments? I'm not being snarky, in fact, this is really exciting and I hope it's true. I'm just trying to verify how solid the information is.
