Nicely said, LaCageAuxFollesFan2. Bernadette is one of the biggest, most recognizable theater stars of this generation. Her accomplishments on stage and what many consider to be her status as a "living legend", make it very appropriate for her to be part of the Tony Awards each year. It's probably true that more people would be upset if she wasn't included in the ceremony.
Ugh! Idina wins one Tony and she should get more time then Bernadette Peters! If you are complaining about Bernadette's English accent(which was not the best) what about Idina's lack of acting? Maybe she isn;t as versatile as what I think she is, but she is pretty damn good. And would you like her to make her hair a butch cut? Dykish? Lupnosh?
And what the F*** is with the age stuff? She looks fantastic, and has more than proven her talent--Broadway, of course, but also movies and a TV series. She looks better than many her juniors can ever hope to look! Her hair and skin are flawless. Lets see what some of the "young" folks do in the next 25 years.
Minor Broadway Legend. The real (still alive)female musical legends are Channing,Rivera and Lansbury. Peters is not quite up there yet.She appearing in every Tony telecast does diminish the 'excitement' of the television show, I'd like to see Betty Buckley, Patti Lupone, Audra Mc Donald anyone, just someone different. Not everyone foams at the mouth at the thought of Peters appearing once again.
When was the last time Lupone was on Broadway? Nice to have her back though. Mmmmm Bernadette is a major legend. Lupone and Buckley I would say not even legend status.
Lupone was on Broadway in Noises Off, just prior to Peters doing Gypsy.I'm just over seeing her do EVERY Tony Awards telecast, there are plenty of other singer/actresses, case in point the year Rosie O'Donnell hosted and opened with a medley with Jennifer Holiday, Betty Buckley and Patti Lupone. Yay! For once Peters wasn't there and it was a refreshing change.I'm sure there are plenty of people who like me, see her, and think, her again?
Oh, legend, schmegend, the terminology is completely subjective and arbitrary. To me, she overwhelmingly is; to you, apparently not.
I'm pretty sure if any of the other ladies mentioned want to appear on the Tony Awards in any given year, they're more than welcome. It's probably more an annual matter of "ready, willing, and able," and Bernadette simply makes herself available.
A few years ago, they had a very difficult time finding anyone willing to host. At the last minute, Bernadette and the late Gregory Hines went on as co-hosts. Did they want to do this thankless task? Probably not, but neither did anyone else, so they stepped forward and took on the responsibility. It's a matter of commitment and discipline.
Yeah, I was also really disappointed to see Steve Sondheim in the photo coverage. I mean, c'mon, haven't we seen enough of this guy? And talk about bad hair. More Idina!!
..."and Bernadette simply makes herself available". Apparently more than available. I say she must have photos! Yes, I'm sure no one wants to host the awards, they don't do it for nothing you know. $$$$.
You're also setting yourself up for potshots no matter what. Look at Hugh Jackman. He's handsome, talented, charismatic, and gave a legendary (to use a popular term) Tony-winning performance. He's a great host, but this year a sizeable portion of the message board chatting classes decided he was "over," and it was now time to turn against him.
All of these people are rich. I doubt that their fee for appearing on the Tony Awards is much of a motivation.
I say, at the next Tony Awards they have Bernadette Peters, Patti LuPone, Idina Menzel, and Betty Buckley come out together and then Sean Hayes can chase after them with fake scissors. Because running with real scissors would be irresponsible.
