I think the biggest Broadway star to appear in Smash deserves her own thread :P.
I am surprised that she is actually singing something from GYPSY. I can't view the clip though because it is region locked and I am outside the US.
Thoughts?
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
It's a lot of fun, golbineau, and I'm actually looking forward to next Monday night (actually, this week's show wasn't bad either, surprise, surprise).
What I want to know is why Ivy's mother shows up at rehearsal in the first place.
golbineau, I thought that Bernadette was very good, but not knock-your-socks-off great. The interplay between Ivy, the other characters and her was, however, excellent. I disagree with the statement that Bernadette/Ivy's mom was only at the rehearsal to sing this song, as it also allowed an important piece of character development for Ivy.
^oh it definitely adds a lot of texture for Ivy, and I liked the interplay. But my question was simpler. Not how it served the show (SMASH that is) for Ivy's mom to come to rehearsal, but how it makes sense, in the story (that SMASH is telling), that Ivy's mom has showed up at rehearsal. Reginald, your answer was a hoot!
Was I the only one who got the impression, based on Ivy's phone conversation with her mother in the first episode, that Ivy's mother didn't know about or care much for Broadway? I mean, I guess it makes sense to set up Ivy's mother and Karen's parents as opposite ends of the spectrum in that regard...
When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain.

That's what I initially thought, givesmevoice, but now I get the impression that Ivy's mother is just not going to be proud until Ivy officially lands the starring role. The phone call was when Ivy was still in callbacks, and justifiably excited for it. I imagine her mother was of the "well don't get excited it's not like you've got an offer yet" camp.
I'll second what Phyllis said, the vibe I got was either a. she feels like she'll never be the star her mom was, which seems to be the route they are going seeing how everyone was falling over her at rehearsals or b. her mom is a "don't get your hopes up" sorta gal.
The idea to make Ivy's mother a Broadway star (and to get Bernadette Peters to play her) wasn't conceived until after the show was picked up to series and already in production again, so you're dead on in picking up that she was characterized entirely differently in that scene on the phone in the pilot, givesmevoice.
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.
So is this scene RIGHT before the Workshop because that's what the episode is about isn't it? Wouldn't Ivy's mother come down thinking this is the LEAST she could do because it probably may not really hit the Broadway stage? Just an idea.
I wonder if she'll pull a Mommie Dearest and steal the part from Ivy(fingers crossed) and then show Karen what charisma really is(Karen is such a mannequin compared to Bernedette and to think the writers are trying to pass Karen off as the next Sutton Foster)
Most of all I can't wait to see The Witch from Into the Woods and The Grand High Witch share the screen together, finally
Not since the premiere have I been so excited for enepiside
