Well, AC, I'd like to say I'll do my best to represent the California contingent and do my share of bashing. But in fact I expect to thoroughly enjoy Ms. Clark. I'm very excited that she was cast.

^^^Well, she was a wonderful Joanne, so Sondheim ought to return at least one call. Lupone was the first Joanne I've ever heard who realized that "Ladies Who Lunch" actually has a Latin beat. But it isn't a role that calls for sexiness.

I know several straight men who say they find her sexually disturbing. For some reason she threatens them. One went so far as to describe her open mouth as a vagina with teeth.

Straight men! Who can explain 'em?

ok shoot me cause I made a typo. I see this is a very childish board where one can not have and voice an opinion. The only reason i brought patti into it at all is because both stars are constantly being compared because they both are talanted broadway divas whose careers sometime overlap eventhough there performance styles are as different as night and day. with that said, i feel that patti imo is a much more natural and effortless actress who can even excell in straight plays as well unlike bernadette who has never played in a non musical. and on top of that patti can still hit the notes and belt out a song where as bernadette simply cant as evidenced by the 4 different performances i saw of follies during its recent run. also, as a bit of trivia patti just missed 1 performance of gypsy during the entire run and ms peters when she played the same role back in 2003, missed quite a few preview performances cause her voice couldn't handle the demands of the role..

Describing Lupone's mouth as a vagina with teeth is pretty accurate. If I saw her on the street I'd run for my life.

lupone76, get your facts straight. After Bernadette recovered from the illness she had at the beginning of Gypsy's run, she missed ONE performance over the next year. You can love Patti all you want, but she is irrelevant to this thread.

ms peters when she played the same role back in 2003, missed quite a few preview performances cause her voice couldn't handle the demands of the role.

According to ATC she missed 9 performances in total. 8 were during previews or shortly after opening, and 1 was a personal day when her husband had surgery. Didn't she have a respiratory infection or something early on? (i.e. it was more complicated than simply her voice not being up to it).

I guess I am lucky, I only saw FOLLIES once - the first Broadway preview. Bernadette's voice was almost perfect and she gave what I thought was a spectacularly moving, dreary (in a good way) performance as Sally.
