Not sure what element of the working broadway community is in the Tony committee, but the people I know are all rooting for Billy. There is a lot of well deserved love for him.

Stark Sands isn't anywhere near the other two. Billy was good, he was fine, but was he GREAT? I don't know. There seemed to be a piece lacking in his performance. It was a little too much "show" and not enough "real" for me. The portions where he was just talking to people in the factory, I don't feel like he needed to be so BIG. It just didn't work for me. The heartfelt scene between him and Sands in the bathroom just didn't go over for me because there was just no emotional depth.
Bertie, however, is giving an incredible performance. Sure he might not be on stage the whole time, but who cares? It's not an award for stamina, it's an award for performance, and his is pretty brilliant. He takes a character that a lot of people know and flips it. He's just incredible in the role.

I don't think anyone is denying Bertie's performance. I certainly am not. I thought he was wonderful and as I've said, I thought for sure he'd take supporting. The argument, in my opinion, is whether his character is a "leading" role. While there are good points to be made on both sides, ultimately I felt his character was decidedly "featured". The fact that the resolution of his character arc was one of the weak points in the musical certainly added to that feeling for me.

Well of course..everyone has his or her own opinion. I loved Billy Porter enough to see the show twice and I was moved both times. Not to put down Bertie..it's really hard to compare because the styles of the performances are totally different because the parts are totally different but they both do amazing jobs.
Honestly, I am really a huge fan of Anthony Warlow at Annie. I would imagine he's going to be nominated but he's not going to win because Daddy Warbucks is not that kind of part that commends such attention. But if we are talking a gorgeous voice and a subtle beautiful performance of a part that's could be just ordinary, he's done a stand-out job. But subtlety is not usually a formula for a winning in the Tony's.
If I were on the committee, I would vote for Billy...but that's me.

To me, Billy is giving the performance one would expect. If you were to sit down and read that script, that's the performance I'd see in my head. Nothing really new or interesting brought to the table. He's a drag queen on and off stage. That's about it. He has a weird accent and he never drops the schtick. He wasn't bad by any means, but the best performance by a male this year on Broadway? Not at all.
The Tony isn't for how many minutes you're on the stage or if you're a lead at all. As far as "leading male" roles in Matilda, he's probably the lead male, so it makes sense. If you were to sit down and read the book of Matilda or the script, I think what he's taken and done with the role is extraordinary. I was expecting something and he totally gave me something out of left field, but I loved it.

Having seen both Matilda and Kinky, and enjoying both shows AND performances from Bertie and Billy, I would vote Billy. Also, whoever said Bertie IS winning... this category is definitely not a shoe in for anyone. Just going along with what everyone is saying, the roles are not equal in size or even close to it. Having seen Kinky several times, Billy is giving his life on stage, 110% committed to his character (Bertie is too, I'm sure) but I guess one factor that I want him to win is because he has been working in THIS community for the past 20 years. He deserves it. If this were the same race in the West End, I'd be more supportive about Bertie winning. That may sound stupid but it's just nice to have "one of our own" take the prize.

It honestly annoys the mess out of me that people are so hung up on Bertie's stage time. It's not his fault he would put in the category he was put in. So, just judge the performances. I don't think Billy should get the award because he's on stage more. When I saw it his voice sounded rough and like he could use some less stage time. Bertie for the win! I found Billy's performance to be totally lacking any heart or nuance or anything surprising.

BECAUSE the character is from a children's book, Bertie is rather 2 dimensional. There is no character growth or change. I understand that's the character and all, but that affects my opinion of the performances.
I'm on Team Billy.
I do wonder, however, if there is so much debate between the two, if a third person might actually sneak in for the win.

Yeah, it's defientely going to be Billy. Bertie was fantastic, and I think he has a good, but SLIM chance of winning, but he was barely in it. If he had much more stage time, Bertie would defientely win or at-least be neck-to-neck. The producers REALLY should have got him Best Featured Actor. Bertie would be a lock for that, HANDS DOWN.
But, yeah. Billy does look and sound fantastic in Kinky Boots and I can see why he would win.

It annoys me seeing how many people are saying that Bertie shouldn't win because he isn't on stage enough! It is the job of an entirely different community to choose the categories, and they put him in the leading category. The Tony voters just have to choose who they think does what they are meant to do better, and not start trying to do the jobs of the other committees!

It's "shoo in, not "shoe in", nobody is giving their life, they're performing, no one commits more than 100%, and no one deserves to win based on how many years they've spent in the community. That's what Lifetime awards are for - and these kinds of posts occur every year. You'd think I'd learn to avoid the pre-Tony board.
