sorry to double post but someone suggested either Natalie Portman or Amy Adams as Fantine. They can still pass for young I think.
Amy has the purity that's so totally Fantine while Natalie has youth written on her face.

Amy Adams I could see as Fantine. I'm betting we'll see either her or Anne Hathaway in there somewhere.
Looks like the news has dried up again! It seems to be coming in ebbs and flows, with big bursts of articles followed by weeks of silence. And still no official confirmation of the director or casting from Mackintosh or any of the studios involved. Guess we'll just stay tuned...

Posted: 7/9/11 at 8:28amHugh said again this week in a radio interview promoting his Toronto show that he was doing this and he was asked where it would be filmed and he said he thought it would be in London. He also said something like "they are sorting things out" so they are probably still working things out.

Posted: 7/9/11 at 9:17amIt was mentioned when the movie was first announced also that it would probably be filmed "somewhere in Europe" but just because it takes place in Paris doesn't mean it has to be filmed there. Yes, maybe for studio-type filming and for some generic-looking places. But Paris is very distinct in feel and look. The city has even retained much of the 19th century look. Maybe they will film mainly in London and then cross via the Eurostar to do some location filming in Paris

As for filming in London, maybe he meant they'll be doing *studio* filming in London? They'll probably have to do the outdoor filming on either backlot sets or in small European towns that haven't changed much.

Quite a few reports on Twitter that Hugh tells the audience during his one-man show in Toronto that he most likely will be in the movie - I doubt he would even mention it if there was any question that he wasn't doing it.

Ooo, yeah, Jason Isaacs would make a great Javert! Not sure if he can sing but he'd definitely got that intent facade going. He was the only thing I liked about The Patriot, and he makes a great Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter movies, too!
Thanks for Hugh news, interesting! It'd be neat to think that he and Colm got together, although I think Colm lives in Toronto so he might have just been seeing the show.

It has been around long enough that even people who have no exposure to theatre have probably heard about this one- at least from Family Guy (which reminds me- why not Kirk Cameron as Jean Valjean). Stars could really take us out of the story. I would cast the best of the best from the stage. It's a sung-through musical so the voices have to be amazing!! That's partly why I'm not a fan of the Phantom movie. 2 hours of singing by people who don't sing doesn't make a lot of sense.

This is one reason why I'd like to see Alfie play Valjean instead of Hugh. He's an unknown, but he does have the voice. Sadly I don't think the producers agree.

People forget about the debacle that PHANTOM OF THE OPERA and RENT turned out to be both in terms of the quality of the films as well as their box office. Both of them (especially RENT) were cast in such a way that the name was the star, and they ended being huge bombs. Casting the original cast in RENT was especially a big mistake given that they were all too old for their roles and only a couple of them could actually act on screen. Casting non-stars Emmy Rossum, Gerard Butler (he wasn't the name he is now at the time), and Patrick Wilson in PHANTOM was also a mistake, the movie didn't sell, Butler and Rossum had no chemistry, and Rossum proved to be completely bland on camera. So I don't understand why people keep insisting that the name LES MIZ alone will sell the film when there's clearly proof that this is simply not true.
They need to cast stars in this, there's at least two taped productions of LES MIZ with stage actors, watch those if you want to see them play the roles. A film is a completely different monster, you need actors who can act on screen and more importantly, can actually sell the movie. Hugh Jackman is exactly the direction in which they need to go. Add the likes of Melanie Laurent, Marion Cotillard, Helena Bonham Carter, Paul Bettany, Amy Adams, and Paul Giamatti and you have a great ensemble that would make the movie actually stand a chance.
