La la la la LaChanze! Loved her performance and I think that she brought up what was good (not horrible and not great) material and made it truly enjoyable.
Patti, whom I saw from the front row, was truly wonderful. She created a whole new Lovett than anyone's ever seen, but she already had what I think is brilliant material to work with to have a farther ahead starting point.
Either is really fine with me but I'd much prefer LaChanze.
Cheers,
Christopher

I SO want to root for my homegirl, mi chica, mi diva Chita Rivera. But, let's face it, the nomination was enough of a recognition for her.
And the real deserving DIVA this year is The Patti. NEVER bet against THE PATTI! GO PATTI!

Although Kelli O'Hara gives my favorite performance of the five, I'd probably give the award to La Chanze. She has a miserably underwritten role and makes the most of it. You have to give her credit for playing a bum hand so well.

Or, you could give it to the actress who played the WELL written role amazingly.

LaChanze gave a performance, while Patti tutted her tuba.
LaChanze all the way baby!

No it's not. Patti's performance was not that amazing. It was good but there was really nothing to her Ms. Lovette. I am not blaming her i blame the production. This production only really focused on Sweeney and Toby. Therefore it didn't give Lovette a huge charectar change. I just feel it was more like she is singing and playing. She is doing a great job but i personally feel she has no change in the show.
I guess it came out nasty but it wasn't intended to be.

Posted: 5/24/06 at 2:26pmIs there anyway we could give a retro-active Tony to Bernadette for 2003 when that bizatch Winokur stole it from her?

pssst, Bwaybaby, it's Mrs Lovett, not Mrs Lovette. Don't make us send The Patti over there to kick some butt (cause you know she will...)
and ps Patti's performance in Sweeney Todd is divalicious, and she deserves to win the Tony Award. LaChanze is good. No need to take anything away from her. But Patti's is the performance that will be remembered for generations to come.

Thanks for the correction.
I just feel like people want Patti to get the tony because she is PATTI LUPONE. I mean i love her she was great in Evita and Sunset but i just feel like the way she was asked to play Mrs Lovett is anything memorable. I feel the most memorable thing about the production was the lighting and the fact that they played their own instruments. I am not trying to take anythign away from Patti i just feel like her competition is just as good. But i would rather see LaChanze get the award. I will be fine with Patti Sutton Chita or LaChanze winning it. But i personally want LaChanze to walk away with it.

It had damn well better go to Patti.
I don't get all the hoopla over LaChanze's performance or her in general. I didn't think she was all that and a bag of Ricolas.
Kelli was wonderful in Pajama. But this is not the role she will win a Tony for. Besides, she should have won last year.
Chita. No way.
I love Sutton Foster and believe her to be my generation's big Broadway star. However, her role is really a glorified featured performance and I don't think she'll win.

"I don't get all the hoopla over LaChanze's performance or her in general. I didn't think she was all that and a bag of Ricolas."
Now you're just being obtuse. The performances are all excellent--I think LaChanze should get it because her performance is ASTOUNDING and she carries the show. I also think TCP is much better than it's gotten credit for. LaChanze all the way. Chita, Patti and Sutton have all had their performances--this one is LaChanze's. And if she doesn't win I will have lost what little respect I have for the Tonys.

I don't know if I'd call anyone's opinion "obtuse" Danielm, but being as you did, allow me to just add that your LaChanze statements could be characterized by "obtuse" by others. Losing respect for the Tony Awards if someone else who is quite worthy (some would say moreso) - say... oh, Patti LuPone or *any* of the other nominees - takes home the award? I think that's a tad extreme.
