Who will be nominated? Win?
Kevin Kline - Present Laughter
Jefferson Mays - Oslo
Mark Ruffalo - The Price
Simon McBurney - The Encounter
Gideon Glick - Significant Other
Denis Arndt - Heisenberg
Joe Mantello - The Glass Menagerie
John Benjamin Hickey - Six Degrees of Separation
Corey Hawkins - Six Degrees of Separation
John Slattery - The Front Page
Liev Schreiber - Les Liaisons Dangereuses
Richard Roxburgh - The Present
Nick Kroll - Oh, Hello
John Mulaney - Oh, Hello
Stand-by Joined: 2/14/17
I doubt they would nominate only John Mulaney or Nick Kroll, and I doubt that with so many stellar performances this season either of them will be nominated. Especially considering how stand-up-y their show was, and how long it will have been closed by the time noms roll around.
I think the first 5 guys on the list will be nominated.
My guess would be:
Kline
Arndt
Glick
Hawkins
Mantello
You don't think Mays will be nominated??
No, it's a very thankless and non-dramatic role with no weight or meat.
I disagree about Mays. I think he'll be nominated over Arndt, who will likely (sadly) be forgotten. Plus, Mays is a Tony darling. I think a lot of this will ride on the Six Degrees reviews AND how the producers petition (or don't) Hickey and Hawkins.
I'm not sure having one win and one nomination, a decade apart, can qualify an actor as a Tony "darling." I love Mays, but to me Oslo was all about the featured players. Mays and Ehle were narrators and provided the dramatic conceit. I wish they had been offered more to do.
In the original Six Degrees, Courtney B Vance was nominated in Lead. I could see a scenario where Corey Hawkins could break through there as well. John Benjamin Hickey, though wonderful, doesn't have as much weight to his role, comparatively, and I cant see him competing in such a crowded field.
Kline, Glick, and McBurney for sure things. Ruffalo, Hawkins, Arndt, and Mays compete for the last 2 slots.
No one thinks Roxburgh? I'm surprised by that.
I think Arndt will be forgotten. Agree that McBurney will get a nomination.
Kline, Glick, McBurney, Mays. Ruffalo and Hawkins compete for last slot.

I thought he was great but not great enough to get in over the men in the spring. I think it'll be Kline, Glick, Ruffalo, McBurney, and Mays.
Not saying it's impossible for him to be nominated, but I think McBurney is far from a sure thing.

Is he who you want to win or think will win? Given how small its audience have been and that it will be closed before noms come out, I don't see that happening. I am assuming Kline will win. Despite the show having gotten meh reviews, he got mostly great ones.

It is what I think will happen. I didn't manage to catch this show so I am predicting based on critics reviews and audience feedback.
It's not that out of the realm of possibility. Julie White won for The Little Dog Laughed in 2007, and that had closed months earlier. By no means is Gideon Glick a lock, but it's not like there's a ton of buzz around anyone else.

To be fair, though, Julie White had received RAVE reviews universally. Her biggest competition was from Angela Lansbury (only because she's a legend, but she was in an AWFUL play) and Eve Best (who got a love letter from Brantley but normal good reviews from everyone else). Gideon Glick didn't receive the kind of reviews that Julie White got.

I don't agree. Glick's reviews, even by critics who disliked the play, gushed over him. Adam Greene's review in New York is case and point. Brantley only called him an Expert Performer, but I'm pretty sure the sweat/indecent/Sig O reviews were all anti-Isherwood related. And the industry knows that.

There is so much wrong with what you just wrote, I don't even know where to begin. So I won't.

I agree with BJH. Her reviews were euphoric. Click got excellent but not 'you're out of your mind if you miss this great comic performance' reviews. She not only beat Lansbury; she beat Redgrave, who got great reviews in Year of...
Okay, so truthfully, I thought Gideon Glick had this award totally locked up.
Now that we know our nominees (Denis Arndt, Chris Cooper, Corey Hawkins, Kevin Kline, and Jefferson Mays), who is the effective frontrunner?

Looks like I was right about Arndt, but wrong about Glick and Mays!

Gideon Glick was snubbed and had one of the best performances of this season. How did the Tony voters miss that?
Hours later, I'm still bothered that Glick's performance was not acknowledged. I was never a fan before, but he completely changed my mind. Revelatory.
