Best Revival Of A Play 2019

I think this deserves its own thread. IMO, probably the most competitive category this season minus Lead Actor in a Play. I think there is still potential for King Lear to grab a nomination here, especially with the absolute love for Ms Jackson. If I had to guess though, the top 4 would still be All My Sons (Granted, 1 preview thus far), Burn This, Torch Song, and The Waverly Gallery. I can see any of them wining to be perfectly honest, with Waverly and Burn this likely being the leading contenders. Lots of good, if not great competition in this category. I can't wait to see Burn This next week. Id love to discuss with people who have seen most of the revivals!

I agree these seem like the most likely 4 nominees, at least at this point (although Boys in the Band could also knock out one of the four; and of course Lear could potentially get in as well, even with the awful reviews). As far as what wins, though, this seems wide open. More often than not revival goes to something still running, which in theory would make this between Burn This and All My Sons. But there are certainly exceptions (although were Torch Song or Waverly unanimously revered enough to be remembered enough to get the necessary votes? That's the real question).

I definitely don’t think we should count The Boys In The Band out, at least for a nomination. It was a big starry revival that got good reviews, and the play categories tend to be kinder to closed productions (This Is Our Youth, You Can’t Take It With You, A View From The Bridge just recently)

Torch Song, Burn This, and Waverly Gallery are likely nominees. The last category is totally up for grabs: Lear (they could nominate it for TRYING to do something interesting), Boys In The Band, All My Sons, True West.

I don't want to say there's no deserving frontrunner, but... there's no deserving frontrunner. If Oklahoma! hadn't transferred, this would be Kiss Me Kate's to lose in a combined category.

Yes.

The Boys In The Band. The Waverly Gallery. Burn This. Torch Song.

Could do without Torch Song. Production/design/directing (thumbs down) - but others liked it. Could've been much better in different hands. Liked Waverly. Cast stronger than direction (those transitions unthoughtful ... yuck).

So far I've only seen The Waverly Gallery from the list but I will be seeing Burn This later this month and hopefully All My Sons next month. I do agree that The Waverly Gallery should be nominated.

Something I hadn't really thought about, but is this the fewest number of revivals we've seen in a season (at least in a long while)? Obviously the lack of musical revivals has been discussed, but there's only 7 play revivals as well for a total of 9 (by comparison, in 2010-2011 when there were also only 2 musical revivals, there were 10 play revivals to go with them). I guess on one hand, it's great to see so many new shows coming to Broadway. But at the same point, when half of those new shows are either jukebox musicals or based off of movies, I kind of wish for some more classics being brought back.

I really think Torch Song! It was an amazing production.

Agreed! I've only seen Torch Song and Waverly Gallery out of the revival choices, but Torch Song was the far superior show, imho. (I thought there were some very solid performances in Waverly, particularly Elaine May, but I definitely preferred Torch Song as a whole.)

I admittedly haven't been following the threads too closely for this category, but from my skimming it seems that the Burn This comments are pretty mixed. Curious why people are convinced this is the frontrunner, when I remember most of the Torch Song comments being pretty positive. ...?

I made a special trip to NYC in January just to see Torch Song’s final performance, but saw 4 others shows while there, including The Waverly Gallery. It turns out that I came for Torch Song (which I liked a lot), my favorite show of the trip was The Waverly Gallerly. In fact, it is one of my favorite theatrical experiences ever. Those (plus The Boys in the Band) are the only revivals from this season I’ve seen, but I’m pulling for The Waverly Gallery, Elaine May, and Joan Allen to not only be nominated, but to ultimately win. I can’t imagine any of the other revivals would have bettered my experience at The Waverly Gallery.

I'll be curious to see how Burn This is received by the critics. I found it to be a slog whenever Brandon Uranowitz wasn't on stage. If it doesn't get mostly positive reviews, I expect this will go to Waverly Gallery.
