Agony...Brilliant
Did I abuse her
Or show her disdain?
Why does she run from me?
If I should lose her,
How shall I regain
The heart she has won from me?
Agony!
Beyond power of speech,
When the one thing you want
Is the only thing out of your reach.
[RAPUNZEL'S PRINCE]
High in her tower,
She sits by the hour,
Maintaining her hair.
Blithe and becoming and frequently humming
A lighthearted air:
Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-
Agony!
Far more painful than yours,
When you know she would go with you
If there only were doors.
[BOTH]
Agony!
Oh, the torture they teach!
[RAPUNZEL'S PRINCE]
What's as intriguing-
[CINDERELLA'S PRINCE]
Or half so fatiguing-
[BOTH]
As what's out of reach?
[CINDERELLA'S PRINCE]
Am I not sensitive,
Clever,
Well-mannered,
Considerate,
Passionate,
Charming,
As kind as I'm handsome
And heir to a throne?
[RAPUNZEL'S PRINCE]
You are everything maidens could wish for!
[CINDERELLA'S PRINCE]
Then why no-?
[RAPUNZEL'S PRINCE]
Do I know?
[CINDERELLA'S PRINCE]
The girl must be mad!
[RAPUNZEL'S PRINCE]
You know nothing of madness
Till you're climbing her hair
And you see her up there
AS you're nearing her,
All the while hearing her:
Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-
[BOTH]
Agony!
[CINDERELLA'S PRINCE]
Misery!
[RAPUNZEL'S PRINCE]
Woe!
[BOTH]
Though it's different for each.
[CINDERELLA'S PRINCE]
Always ten steps behind-
[RAPUNZEL'S PRINCE]
Always ten feet below-
[BOTH]
And she's just out of reach.
Agony
That can cut like a knife!
I must have her to wife.
I've always liked this one:
"you move just a finger
say the slighest word
something's bound to linger
be heard"-Into the Woods
And there are some great rhymes in the song "Putting it Together".
I really love the rhyming in LSoH. It's very catchy and well done.
And all you have to do
Is move your little finger,
Move your little finger and --
You can change the world.
Why should you be blue
When you've your little finger?
Prove how just a little finger
Can change the world.
Sondheim is my hero.
Here's for Alan Jay Lerner... who is also astounding.
"The seven deadly virtues, those ghastly little traps,
oh no, my leige, they were not meant for me.
Those seven deadly virtues were made for other chaps
who love a life of failure and ennui.
Take courage. Now there's a sport.
An invitation to the state of rigormort.
And purity, a noble yen.
And very restful every now and then.
I find humility means to be hurt.
It's not the earth the meek inherit, it's the dirt.
Honesty is fatal and should be taboo.
Diligence? I fate I would hate.
If charity means giving, I give it to you
and fidelity is only for your mate!
You'll never find a virtue unstatusing my quo
or making my Beelzebubble burst.
Let others take the high road, I will take the low.
I cannot wait to rush in where angels fear to go.
With all these seven deadly virtues, free and happy little me has not been curst."
I also like "I'm an Ordinary Man" from MY FAIR LADY.
"or making my Beelzebubble burst."
I love the song, but that line makes me cringe everytime.

Let me ask a harder question now:
Good rhymes NOT written by Sondheim...lol
Just kidding
Definitely all the little ones in "When You're Good to Mama"
My favorite being:
When you pass the basket,
folks contribute to.
You put in for Mama,
she'll put out for you.

"And No this isn't over,
Hell it's Just begun
Hail the ressurection of,
the south's least favorite son"
-Parade
"And You and You and nothing but you
Miles and Piles of You
FInally I'll have something worth while
to think of each morning"
-The Last Five Years
As the basketball player in me would say Jason Robert Brown's Got next.
