Best Soprano Voice

Ah...the soprano is my favorite. I for one am getting really tired of hearing these screechy pop belters and wish there would be a return to vogue of the more classically trained legit sound on Broadway. My modern favorites are Audra McDonald, Kelli O'Hara, Rebecca Luker, Laura Benanti, Jennifer Hope Wills and Judy Kuhn (although she has a much richer and more mellow sound than the previous ladies mentioned) and sometimes Melissa Errico. Julie Andrews and Barbara Cook are my favorite "Old Timers". I know this is about sopranos but I would also welcome the return of voices such as Gordan McCrae (spelling?) and Howard Keel back on the Broadway stage. Brian Stokes Mitchell and Brent Barrett come pretty close.

I would also like to add a lesser known soprano, Sarah Rice. Most of you remember her as Johanna on the OBCR of Sweeney Todd. Her "Green Finch and Linnet Bird" is far and away the best rendition of it I have ever heard (and I have heard many).
And also Anna Maria Alberghetti is another soprano that comes to mind.

this obviously is a matter of opinion. I think Audra, kristin and Kelli are the top three now. There aren't many people who can sing the way Kristin can. I mean true technique. Same with Audra. I don't think people really realize what it takes to have technique. And no one really sings "classically" on Broadway. The few exceptions are Phantom of the Opera and THAT'S reserved basically for Piangi and Carlotta. That term is used too much. Legit doesn't equal classical.
Oh and Andrew I'm willing to bet you don't know any of the three women you posted about so your comment isn't based on much truth. Secondly both Kristin and Audra are technically leagues above Kelli because they are A) more versitile and B) older and hence vocally more mature. Although I think Kelli could be just as great.

Kelli
Cheno
Audra
Vicki Clark

Jennifer Hope Wills (an AMAZING Coloratura, she needs more to do on Broadway)
Ruthie Henshall (Truely an incredibly versatile voice. She can go from operatic soprano, to the low alto of Roxie Hart)

I second Lisa Howard, she is amazing. I saw her in Spelling Bee and was floored by how she just shifted up to her beautiful upper range. Cheno is wonderful as well. She has that annoying speaking voice, but a gorgeous singing voice.
Julie Andrews is my all-time favorite soprano.

I love Audra McDonald's voice because it's very dramatic and strong. I adore Kristin Chenoweth's legit soprano, I think she has great technique and I have about the same range as her. The only time I've heard Kelli O'Hara was on the Tony's and I was smitten, she has a very beautiful voice. I also love Laura Benanti's voice...her rendition of "Initials" on the Hair Benefit CD makes me laugh so hard. I think Jennifer Laura Thompson has a very unique voice, the first time I heard "Follow Your Heart" from Urinetown I died her voice is so weird, but I love it. She was the first Glinda I saw and she had a cold, lol, so her voice wasn't very strong but her acting definitely made up for it.
And of course, Julie Andrews.

Marin Mazzie is one of those people with a freaky range. I know because I've worked with her.
She is a soprano, yes... but she is also an alto. I've never met another singer like her. She has a hugely rich lower range, and it's equally as strong as her upper range. It's because of this soprano range and belt that she works so much. But she can sing as "smoky" and low as any alto you can name.
A very unique talent.

Marin has the high range, but she can also match Karen Akers tone for tone, so I disagree.
But she is the exception to the rule.
