I'm not really sure what you would consider her, but I think Rachel York has a beautiful upper register.
Julie Andrews is absolutely my favorite. I just adore her voice.

I think a lot of the women mentioned here are actually mezzo sopranos who have great ranges, Rachel York included. She and Marin Mazzie, for example, can sing alto, mezzo and soprano with great power and quality. Neither one seems to have a weak spot.
When I heard Kelli O'Hara for the first time in "Light in the Piazza" I was very impressed with her clear soprano. It will be interesting to hear how she handles the lower notes in "Pajama Game."

This is the definition of a soprano- 1 : the highest singing voice of women or boys and formerly of castrati; also : a person having this voice
2 : the highest voice part in a 4-part chorus
I'm really tired of people saying, "She has a really good soprano...." .... that makes NO sense.
Liz Callaway. I listened to her version of "Meadowlark" yesterday and wanted to punch her for her AMAZING voice.
Well, I have to say this, not just because she is a dear friend. Jennifer Hope Wills is my choice. And she is definately the nicest as well.:)
Favorite sopranos:
Soprano Belters:
Liz Callaway
Betty Buckley
Bernadete Peters
Marin Mazzie
Soprano Legit:
Barbara Cook
Rebecca Luker
Patti Cohenour
Audra McDonald
for soprano belt/theater singers no one is near liz callaway, in my estimation--for the purity and ease of her singing, the exquisite phrasing and intelligence with which she puts forth a song.
legit style singers?
barbara cook is in the hall of fame and i really can't compare her to anyone--she is a stand alone voice.
i love christine andreas. i wish i loved audra more becuase i have the feeling i should but i just don't enjoy her as a presenter of song.
Garland Grrrl---Agreed. That's why Liz and Ms. Cook are at the top of my two lists.
Interesting... I have Audra listed here BECAUSE of her live performances, not because of her recordings. I like her better presenting a song in a theatre, than just listening to the sound of her voice on CD.
Betty Buckley is that way for me, too. She is so much more electrifying live than on a recording. That (unusual) voice of hers just zings out at you in the theatre and shakes the rafters. I've seen her several times in different musicals and it's not the same experience "on CD."
And Barbara Cook is a freak of nature (in a good way)... I've never heard a soprano of her age that sounds that good. She can sing most 20-year-old ingenue gals under the table. I've never seen anything like it. I just saw her at the Hollywood Bowl this past summer in the Sondheim birthday bash... She sang "Move On" with Josh Grobin. It was incredible.

ehhh I find Liz Calloway very vanilla. She's not bad just kind of there.
best12, there is an Australian singer named Toni Lamond, 73 years old, with the Barbara Cook syndrome - she has not lost any of her vocal quality nor power. Amazing.
rath---now THIS is the real "defying gravity."
Damn right!

Julie Andrews had the purest of pure sopranos I've heard.
Jill Paice
Judy Kuhn
Christiane Noll
Sarah Brightman (in her POTO prime; not now)
>>>
Also, Madeline Kahn was a legend.
Aww. She seemed like such a sweet lady, too. =(

i'd have to go with Kristen Chenoweth, Kathleen Battle, Lauren Molina, Marin Mazzie, Natalie Dessay and Audra Mcdonald.
If Patti Lupone, Donna Murphy were sopranos I would choose them as well.
And whoever said Sarah Brightman, Maria Callas, or Idina Menzel, you should jump off a cliff.
Jill Paice is stunning both in voice and looks. That is true singing.
Someone said Judy Kaye, right? I can't remember anymore.
If not, I'm saying it now.
I agree, Best12Bars. I love Audra's voice on CD, but she is even better live. I think she's a phenomenal performer with one of the strongest stage presences I have seen, and when I saw her she was sick! She was %100 percent dedicated to each of her songs. I love her because she is not one of those pretty voices who just sit and "sort of" perform it. She is there %100 percent.
Isbabella, I read in an interview with Donna Murphy that she used to sing soprano. Maybe we just haven't heard it yet. We know she can vocally get up there at least from her scatting in Wonderful Town.
lc, I was wondering when someone else would mention Rachel!
In an interview it said she had a 3 1/2 octave range, which is i think something like what Marin has. Both have beautiful voices, especially when using their soprano range
Going back to the whole distinction between Alto and Soprano - I'm pretty sure that an alto has a richer sound down low (but not gutsy and chesty, however), and a soprano feels comfortable singing up high softly or loudly. This is not saying that altos can't hit soprano notes, they just can't sustain them or sing them quietly, and sopranos can hit alto notes, but aren't comfortable there. That being said, I'd say like... Idina is a definite alto and Kristin is a definite soprano, even though one goes higher than the other sometimes (ie: "For Good").
And Kristin is my favorite soprano
But what about Lea Salonga? I'd say she's another good one - how many of us grew up with Aladdin wanting to sing like Jasmine in "A Whole New World"!
