Has anyone seen a good production of RENT that has been really good but also different than the original production? 
I find most productions I come across are carbon copies of the original.

The legendary and iconic RENT: Remixed is widely considered to be the definitive production.

I rather enjoyed this production. It was different than what I was used to with RENT. "Out tonight" was killer. They had MiMi shooting up during the song, the actress really brought on a addict/dying portrayal. Her vocals were insane, she started with falsetto during the beginning out tonight's, and during "Be my night owl, take my hand we're gonna howl" she just slides right up not using her falsetto. Ugh, it was just an amazing take on the song. Here's a link to some B-Roll montage;

Sadly there's very little video footage, but I thought David Cromer's Rent at American Theater Company was exceptional. It was incredibly intimate and rough around the edges... I was able to connect with the material in a way I hadn't ever before. There were some complaints that it wasn't the best sung Rent that had ever been staged... and that's probably true... but while losing a big it gained quite a bit too.

I don't want to toot my own horn, but the amateur production I was in when I was 16 was said by some of our audience members to be the best production outside of the original cast.

I played Mark in a a production of Rent staged as a concert arena with the audience sitting on all sides and costumes were inspired by contemporary artists and actors.

Joanne = Adele, Maureen = Erykah Badu, Mark = Justin Thoreau, Roger = Adam Levine, Angel = Adam Lambert, Benny = John Legend, Mimi = Kesha

David Cromer's American Theatre Company's Chicago staging from a couple years ago was the best RENT I've ever seen or ever hope to see.

Working on this production was one of the first shows I worked on in Chicago. I saw it so many times and felt grateful for it. I still have video of Seasons of Love and it's just beautifully haunting.

Can you explain what's going on in the snapshot with the shopping cart then? I can't figure out what moment in the show that is to save my life.

This was Contact. Angel was much more a dancer than singer, so our Alexli Darling was pushed around on the cart by the bag lady as a Diva character singing the "Take Me" portion while Angel danced the ravages of their disease
