Billy Elliot Closing in London

Cameron Mackintosh has announced the closing date for Billy Elliot so they may proceed with a major refurbishment in order to make the theater available for grander scale shows. This will include interior and exterior refurbishment including a 6 meter extension of the stage. They hope to return to the West End in a few years.

I had always hoped to see it in London and I am scheduled to be there in the summer. Darn. Bad timing. But I guess it's hard to complain about 11 years. That final show should be memorable.

Bad timing for me, too. I was planning on seeing it, but I'll be there later in April. Ugh.

How do shows tour in the UK? There aren't that many cities it basically like touring the state of California and all those cities in the uk aren't that far away from eachother. The logistics make no sense.

It seems weird to me, too. The UK is even smaller than California.

Not sure if I will have the time but it's certainly worth looking into. Thanks so much for the info..

Dublin isn't in the UK.

It's in a whole other country across a sea, with a different currency (the Euro), and has been independent of the United Kingdom for the last 93 years, just FYI.

I think that poster meant the actual size.

What matters is not just size but population density. Britain is the second most densely populated island on earth after Japan.

Why producers find it worth touring shows in the UK but not, by inference of your comments, California is anyone's guess but an initial conclusion may be that there is a greater interest in the theatregoing in the UK than California.

I did, indeed. Throw in Ireland, and CA is still bigger.

That's pretty sad. I was planning on being in London next fall and it was on my must do list. The theater it was in was pretty nice already. Don't see why it needed to be renovated.

Maybe I will move the trip up to spring Ugh

Not to be confused with Dave19.

Quality always out trumps quantity.

The refurbishment has been on the cards for a long time and they've likely waiting for Billy to fall in sales and also the works around Victoria to be almost complete.
