re: Blood Brothers gets a touch of spice

I can only hope she's improved since Rent. Her "gangsta" take on Mimi was simply awful, but I blame the direction (or lack thereof) more than I do her.

Someone has not been revising their spice girls, Mel B (Scary Spice) was in Rent, Mel C (Sporty Spice) will be Mrs Johnston!

Sorry! Mea Culpa! I used the wrong spice. Nothing worse than confusing salt with sugar. I know nothing about Mel C so, best of luck to her!

With the Nolans on tour, I imagine Kenwright decided to plump for another popstar, how long before we see Sonia as Mrs Johnston?

re: Blood Brothers gets a touch of spice

Mel C was the only Spice Girl who could really sing (although, saying that, I thought they were all fab when I saw them last year). I could be tempted to see 'Blood Brothers' again after 22 years ( I last saw Kiki Dee in the role).

re: Blood Brothers gets a touch of spice

I was kinda repulsed the idea in first sight and then I thought... wait a sec, Mel C is actually the one who can sing in Spice Girls and since Mel B was only OK in RENT, I imagine she can't be worse in Blood Brothers! I might go watch the show!!!!

Damn, I'm finally seeing the show, but it's the end of this month. Kinda want to change all my plans to see Sporty.

Well... i found this out last night and my jaw hit the floor. I don't think she'll have a problem singing it. I just think she's a bit too young for the role. Plus i've never really thought of her as maternal. I dunno... might have to check it out.

If I'd been a spice girl I'd be happily counting the pennies in retirement.

But they all made spiceworld and had trouble playing themselves.

re: Blood Brothers gets a touch of spice

yes... and she was surprisingly brilliant.

but then i am always biased towards the spice girls and anything they do haha.

but she brought a freshenss to the role that I havent seen since the first time is saw it 10 years ago.

Go and see her... she's worth it!

The very audible response to the title of this thread when I saw it was a loud "oh dear lord."

Ms C as Mrs J.

She certainly isn't too young to play the part, probably not far off the right age.

I listened to her on the site were not supposed to mention. I thought she was great. Granted the lack of training is evident, especially when singing with Mrs Lions. However the energy is there and the roughness to her vocals adds to the effect of Mrs J. Having seen the show 6 times never thought i'd bother again but i'm curious to see her towards the end of her run!

Evening Standard gave Mel C. a rave!

Never before have I seen a domino row of hardened critics rise to give a spontaneous standing ovation. Yet this is what they — we — did, along with a rapt and tearful audience, for the gloriously recast Blood Brothers, now celebrating its 21st year in the West End.
Mel C Blood Brothers debut leaves us really, really wanting more
