Wow, and wow again.
There's so much to say and speculate about this, but I shall refrain, for now...

Posted: 5/17/13 at 12:43pmFeingold is the only critic in New York worth reading, as far as I'm concerned. The only actual critic, who elevates his evaluations beyond the level of a mere review. I hope he lands in a new situation soon.

Posted: 5/17/13 at 12:54pmWell, that's it for me and the Voice, and I got my first subscription in '77 or so. The current publishers have taken the hatchet to that masthead so many times, it's probably inevitable that two longtime staff writers like Musto and Feingold will go. Small wonder the editors quit last week.

Posted: 5/17/13 at 1:05pmMaybe Fiengold could replace Brantley? Brantley's way overstayed his welcome and the whole thing about Matilda told me that it's time for him to go -- permanently.

I hope Feingold finds work again soon. He is a wonderful writer. Sad news.

Posted: 5/17/13 at 2:17pmMe too Peej. Feingold and Musto were the only thing keeping it on life support.

Posted: 5/17/13 at 2:26pmWasn't it a free publication anyway? I always grabbed one on the way to the subway.

For some reason, they never have.
People have been telling them for years: Brantley is an embarrassment. Hire Feingold. And they never have.

Totally agree!

I said it in a thread last week that I think the space Feingold has carved out for himself precludes ever writing for the Times as a first or second stringer. He is in no way a Broadway booster.
Sueleen, this appeared on Musto's Facebook page:
"My wish is that I win the lottery on Saturday because if I do I could afford to hire you to write for my site. My dream. Love you."

Sad sad sad. I subscribed to the Village Voice when I went of to college in the fall of 1980 and have been a faithful reader ever since Without Sietsema, Feingold and Musto what is left? Some weeks it seems like those three wrote half the website.
With Life in Hell, Lynda Barry and Savage Love gone..well again, what's left?

The Voice is a sad dinosaur, a bunch of old 50's-style hidebound unthinking liberals. Better, perhaps, than a bunch of 50's-style hidebound unthinking conservatives, but still rather irrelevant and useless. Let it fold.
However, the Times would be awfully smart to take this opportunity to jettison Banal Ben and bring on someone who not only can write, but who actually knows a lot about theatre (aka Feingold). The Times, however, rarely demonstrates that they have that kind of smarts.
