Why was there even a nomination ( yet alone a win) for Warren Carlyle? He reproduced Gower Champion's original choreography--why is he being credited with it? This is exactly why the TONY Awards did not consider him eligible. Granted, it's the biggest dancing on Broadway this season--but how can he accept the award when the original steps and concepts were Mr. Champion's?
Perhaps because the category is listed as Best Choreographer versus Choreography? Either way, it's all very odd.
Jenn Colella winning over Stephanie J Block is absolutely ridiculous. Jenn is great, but Stephanie was brilliant in Falsettos in a much more difficult and meaty role.
Also, it is completely unfair for Dolly's choreo to beat Shuffle Along.
Plus, I hadn't noticed it at first, but Metcalf was totally robbed.

Laura Linney grabbed that award out of Laurie Metcalf's hand.
Another puzzling set of results and winners. Where was War Paint? and I'm sorry, no way to CFA. PC'ness and politics of winning...go figure...
Not that the OCC Awards mean much of anything, but I can't imagine awarding anyone other than Laurie Metcalf.

I wonder if Come From Away is going to win the most awards this season as it is no competing against DEH and Great Comet. That would be great marketing for them

''Come From Away'' won't really compete against ''Dear Evan Hansen'' and ''The Great Comet'' in a major way until the Tonys. The next big awards stop for ''Come From Away'' is the Drama Desk, where it looks like the likeliest winner for Best Musical. Its only Broadway competitor is ''Anastasia,'' and the Drama Desk rarely ever gives Best Musical to an Off-Broadway show ... unless it's ''Hamilton.'' And the other DD nominees for Best Musical are from Off-B'way: ''The Band's Visit,'' ''Hadestown'' and ''The Lightning Thief.''
''CFA'' may go into the Tony homestretch with OCC and DD wins.

It is not Gower's choreography in the revival of Hello Dolly! It pays homage to it throughout but it's not the same. After all, where are waiters' jumps from the original? They are nowhere to be found. Not only is it not Gower's choreography but it's not all of Peter Howard's original dance music either. Hope that clears up the confusion.

^ Even if the choreography was an "homage," were the nominating group and the voters aware of precisely which movements had - 1) replicated Gower's choreography, 2) were inspired by Gower's but a little different, and 3) were completely new moves created by Warren Carlyle?
Just like how Manchester by the Sea's score by Lesley Barber was deemed ineligible for Best Score at the Oscars for utilizing some of the old classical orchestral works, I don't think Carlyle should be eligible at all unless ALL voters are somehow made aware of his new contributions.

I most certainly can.
I'm sorry that Anastasia didn't win best musical. The tuneless Come From Away was a trial from beginning to end.

Musical at the Drama Desks will either be Come From Away or The Band's Visit. It's not a slam dunk for CFA.

It confounds me that, even with Shuffle Along's closing, Savion Glover didn't win best choreography. I still remember that wonderful choreography and it's been over a year since I saw the show.
Regardless, I'm happy for CFA and Andy Karl! No real surprises with these wins.
The waiter's jumps (over the orchestra pit) is towards the ending of the "Hello, Dolly!" number. They are there in full.
So DEH isnt eligible for Drama Desk awards?

Happy to see Danny DeVito get the win. Hopefully this wave continues all the way to the Tony Award.

Delighted for Come From Away, Jenn Colella and Chris Ashley. I'm sorry for Laurie Metcalf, as I thought she was great, but I didn't care all that much for the play (asking for hugs? These are supposed to be Norwegian people).

Granted, ''The Band's Visit'' is no pushover. It just beat ''Dear Evan Hansen'' last night at the Lucille Lortel Awards. It might even win Best Musical at the N.Y. Drama Critics' Circle later today.
However, in the 42-year history of the Drama Desk history of Best Musical, it has gone to an Off-Broadway musical only TWICE: ''Little Shop of Horrors'' (1983) and ''Hamilton'' (2015). ''The Band's Visit'' is no ''Hamilton.'' ''The Band's Visit'' got 7 Drama Desk nominations; ''Hamilton'' got 13, plus a special prize for Andy Blankenbuehler's choreography. (For the record, ''Come From Away'' has 9.)
I know the OCCs don't mean anything but it's a real shame Linney won over Metcalf. Linney is one of my favorite actresses but Metcalf's performance is just on an entirely different level.

The Outer Critics Circle awards might mean nothing to you, but they mean something to the winning performers, producers and creatives of the various shows. You can bet that most all of 'em will be at the Outer Critics dinner on May 25 at Sardi's to pick up their certificates and give their acceptance speeches.
I'm surprised Linney beat Metcalf, but I'm not mad about it. I loved them both equally this season, and ideally I'd like them to tie at the Tony Awards (especially since neither has won before). But I won't be mad at either one of them winning. I'm kinda surprised that Jenn Colella won. I loved her, but I expected this to go to Stephanie or Kate.

Agreed! Most performers that I have encountered are unbelievably humble for any kind of accolade. The Tony may be the "pinnacle" but any award that is nominated for/won is a wonderful thing for any actor.
I'm terribly confused as to how Come From Away won Best Sound Design over The Great Comet. If I'm not mistaken, I read somewhere that the sound design team for TGC literally had to invent code for the sound to be effective with people running all over the huge theatre. I guess now I understand why the Tonys are putting together a special committee of voters for the Sound Design awards next year so that stuff like this doesn't happen.
