Posted: 5/23/05 at 6:40pmI was really glad to see shows like "Sweet Charity" doing so well and ditto to straight plays like "Doubt" and "Pillowman". What really surprises me is the ongoing lack of interest in "Virginia Wolf", especially after the Times review.

Posted: 5/23/05 at 6:40pmEven though Brooklyn is up, it's not enough.. IF you haven't seen it, and are interested.. please check it out. I don't want it to close before I see it in July! there's song clips on brooklynthemusical.com For those who want to promote it, it really needs to be directed to Wicked and Rent fans, most will like it...

WOW! Dig the jump for 700 SUNDAYS!
Nice to see that DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS got another boost!

Posted: 5/23/05 at 6:47pmLittle Women, even after announcing its closing didn't break running costs. Sad.

Posted: 5/23/05 at 6:52pmYeah Sweet Charity! Doing fantastic. Nice jump for DRS also. I love how some people didn't think Sweet Charity will even last through the summer - but as of now I sure think Charity is here to stay.

"WOW! Dig the jump for 700 SUNDAYS!"
Notice that its average ticket price is now $110.55 -- far and away the highest on Broadway. Obviously they greatly increased the number of "premium seats" for the last extension which explains the $300K jump.
Crystal is now grossing nearly as much as WICKED and THE LION KING in a 1,179-seat theatre (as opposed to 1800+ for the other two). That's insane.

Posted: 5/23/05 at 8:35pmThought the Tony nom's would boost "La Cage Aux Folles," but they haven't. 56% for last week is rather pathetic. Come back, Daniel Davis, come back! Failing that, maybe two new leads would do it. Suggestions?

I'm glad to see most shows doing better but what's with the sales for Glengarry Glen Ross? That show should be pulling much more ticket sales. *sigh*
And agreed with the virginia woolf comment -only 58.6% capacity? You've got to be joking.

Posted: 5/23/05 at 8:55pmThe Virginia Woolf situation is a sad one. It's a good production that deserves better, but the people sitting on either side of me left in the first and second intermissions. I guess a lot of tourists don't have the patience to sit through a 3-hour play that consists mostly of verbal abuse, no matter how well-written and performed.
re: Broadway Grosses May 16th to 22nd#12
Posted: 5/23/05 at 9:59pmThe audience for non-musical plays on Broadway is shrinking by the day -- regardless of reviews or awards or anything else. The tourists want to see musicals and musicals only and that's a shame.

As much as this upsets me, this is not really suprising. My mom is one of those 'tourist' that only want to see glamor and glitz. Her reason: An escape from reality.
Maybe it's just me, but now I have a desire to see every play revival on broadway. narg! being broke sucks!

Posted: 5/24/05 at 12:39amIt's nice to see RENT have a signifigant increase. It's been lagging (is that a word?, lol) the past few weeks.

And, you know, a movie.

I don't really know how much the movie actually helped the show. It has been doing really well for quite some time, even before the movie premiered. Honestly, the movie is very pretty to look at, but you just can't get away from the fact that the show, and everything about it, is just far superior to the movie's overall quality....Well anyways, I'm proud of the shows attendance, sales, etc!

With a FRACTION of the running cost, to boot! Good for him.
And Hyper - I wouldn't be too hard on your mom just for wanting to escape reality. It could be worse - she could turn to heroin

Posted: 5/24/05 at 8:20amThe 300K jump for Billy Crystal is surely because he increased the amount of shows from 7 to 8, no?
re: Broadway Grosses May 16th to 22nd#23
Posted: 5/24/05 at 9:21amI know quite well that Phantom was doing alright without the movie. But I'm pretty sure the film did improve its attendance.

well if things keep going the way they are, the Marquis and Minskoff may be empty again soon.
Nederlander is supposed to be staging Woman in White, so i guess if FIddler does not improve, it would be heading to the Minskoff.
Hooray for Phantom, lol
