Posted: 1/12/09 at 5:19pmWhoa, Chicago, Mary Poppins, and Shrek all almost twenty percent down? What's up with that? Attendance is still good at all three, though.

CHICAGO is a tourist attraction, MARY POPPINS is a tourist attraction, SHREK is a tourist attraction with the latter two aimed at families. Now that tourists are gone and the break is over, those grosses were pretty much expected to drop.
But this was a very strong week. Glad that GYPSY went out with a HUGE bang.

Posted: 1/12/09 at 6:32pmI think the average ticket price is extremely telling. While Spring Awakening was full, it's gross wasn't exceptionally high and its average ticket price was 70 bucks. I imagine a lot of tweens are rushing.

It's sad when I barely have to scroll down to look at the grosses.
But good for those shows still on there, good thing Gypsy went out with a bang (somewhat) And In The Heights stayed strong. I think it will be going strong for another month. People will be going to see Lin.

Posted: 1/12/09 at 7:23pmI'm pretty sure In The Heights will be going strong for another couple months at least. It has great of mouth and it isn't the kind of show that would die without the original cast.

Here's something to discuss:
GYPSY's grosses are puzzling. The show took about 2 weeks of previews to finally make a gross above it's reported $600K break even. Then on the strength of the rave reviews and later Tony awards for the stars it had a great summer. The after Labour Day it dipped a bit but was generally holding up until November when it plunged. Christmas week was especially weak.
It rebounded with the holidays and ended with two very solid weeks.
Any thoughts on why the big drop in November (which likely led to the decision to move the closing date up from March 1) and also did the producers do the right thing cutting the last 7 weeks off the run.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Well...they were paying the bills for the most part, but were barely making a dent in the initial investment.
They saw the writing on the wall with the economy and decided to STOP losing money since the next weeks would most likely look like November or worse.
