Ouch for Memphis. Wonder how long they'll last.
Yay for Ragtime's jump!

Posted: 12/21/09 at 3:23pmAccording to the NY Times, MEMPHIS has not had a week below nut. I'm sure they are fine.

Posted: 12/21/09 at 3:27pmWow! Very odd week. The shows grosses were all over the place. Some were really up, somewhat stable or took a nose-dive. Also, it's the same story with attendance.

Thoughts on how Next to Normal is going?

It may not be a huge jump in grosses, but I'm still thrilled about Ragtime's increasing numbers.
Sorry to see that drop for Memphis though. But I'm sure they'll be fine. I think they are doing well with groups, so they probably have a nice advance sale from that.

Ouch for Memphis, indeed. Also, South Pacific's attendance dropped by almost 13%. I know the show is in no trouble financially...it's all profit now, but still, it's not enjoyable to see large drops like that.
I hope Ragtime keeps increasing! The show deserves it. And what a wonderful week for Night Music! I'm so glad to see such a wonderful show doing so well. Of course, I haven't seen the production (YET) so, my opinions are solely based on the show itself.

Hopefully the TV spots Ragtime is doing will help increase their audience even more.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Next to Normal's nut is reported to be around $275K, so they are making that, albeit not by a huge margin.

Posted: 12/21/09 at 4:10pmRagtime's gross though is at the expense of their average ticket price, which is now hitting half-price levels.

Posted: 12/21/09 at 4:18pmSmaxie, better that Ragtime get their weekly gross up than stand on ceremony on ticket prices. For those of us who think this is a worthy production, getting people into the seats helps sell the show in the short term by getting the word out with the hope that it will feed momentum and get them over the hump of this economy.

The problem is that they are discounting by half now, four weeks after opening and still likely running below their operating cost. What's going to happen in January and February?

Posted: 12/21/09 at 4:52pmStill, Ragtime has put over 2,000 more people in the theatre this week than compared to 2 weeks ago. That's a lot more people to start spreading the word about this wonderful show. I'm really hoping to see a nice jump in grosses for this week as they're playing 9 shows this week(Mon @ 8pm, Tue @7pm, Wed @ 2pm & 8pm, Thurs @ 2pm, Fri-DARK, Sat @ 2pm & 8pm, Sun @ 2pm & 7:30pm). Keep it up Ragtime!!!

I wonder what effect the storm had on the traditionally big Saturday evening performances. It may account for some of the fluctuations.
Glad to see RAGTIME continuing to improve, but at the same time FINIAN'S RAINBOW is down after a few weeks of steady growth.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Posted: 12/21/09 at 5:15pmThe numbers are gross/gross....I believe a 3-5% reduction gives the true numbers....the future does not look good for some shows with the Jan- March slowdown coming. But if the producers have deep pockets perhaps some may be saved. Will be curious to see what losses the producers admit to for the Shrek debacle.

Posted: 12/22/09 at 12:38amThe storm on Saturday seriously impacted day-of sales on both Saturday and Sunday, and for shows that traditionally do a lot of business day-of (i.e. Next to Normal), that was pretty unfortunate. I don't think this week is really much to go by as far as how shows are selling - ALNM, for instance, probably sold most of its tickets way in advance, but shows that get more last-minute business were down because of the weather.

Posted: 12/22/09 at 11:47amWell, on the bright side, seeing that Christmas break has started for a great deal of tourists, next week's numbers should be pretty good.

Posted: 12/23/09 at 10:36amevic - regarding Shrek - you can actually look up some rough numbers from the Dreamworks public filings. Bottom line, they are taking a major bath - as in a $15-20 mil loss. When their 2009 10K comes out this spring, you'll see that they got crushed. Even with a few huge weeks in December, they would have been better off financially had they just shuttered immediately when they made the closing announcement.

Posted: 12/23/09 at 7:29pmI'm thinking they are going to use many of the items for the scenery and props for the tour, and the tour will bring in MASSIVE money.
