Strong showing for the plays Giant, Every Brilliant Thing, Dog Day Afternoon, Death if a Salesman.
It’s amazing how good Whitney Leavitt has been for Chicago, good for them.
Does anybody know &Juliet’s nut?

Happy trails to Louis McCartney and the six principals that departed THE OUTSIDERS on Sunday.
Alex "Goldie" Golden also conducted her final show at SIX over the weekend. (She's joining the music team of TITANÍQUE.)
Great start for GIANT and DOG DAY AFTERNOON, as well as DEATH OF A SALESMAN in its first full week of previews.
CHICAGO set a new weekly gross record, and their numbers should immediately come back down to earth with Whitney not performing this week.

Really surprised how well Dog Day Afternoon did. I did not think Jon B or Ebon MB would sell tickets. I doubt these sales are based on the name of the property. It is actually doing considerably better than Death if you think in terms of average ticket price. I guess it shows that 2 supporting performers in well-watched TV shows and movies are bigger ticket sellers than 2 of Broadway's greats. I do acknowledge that we have the opportunity to see Lane and Metcalf pretty regularly, and that Death is probably a little over-exposed (although I suspect that it would have been sold-out in advance if Willie and Linda were being performed by Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts).
I continue to think that the producers of Oh! Mary! misjudged JCMs ability to sell tickets. I imagine this will be a pretty uncontroversial comment if Maya Rudolph sells out for her entire scheduled performances, at prior prices which I assume will actually happen.
I am surprised that Maybe Happy Ending seems to have faded pretty quickly. If its breakeven is as high as was suggested a long time ago (based on technical complexity of the show), that does not bode well for the show returning its investment, which would be just terrible.
If in fact DBH has a breakeven over $1.0MM, how long will the producers keep it running if it has not returned its investment? Does its still being on Broadway really impact touring companys' grosses positively (and how much?).
A really good sign for the producers of OM: the show grossed more last week than it did 52 weeks ago with the original cast. I am assuming that bodes very well for a long run. I walked out at intermission (probably too many shows in a short-time period, coupled with my tendency not to love shows that i consider a little too 'cute', but good for them.
Why can't the operators of this site get Chess's stats correct? Still have the original 1988 production in the stats.

Re: DDA - It’s only their first week and there was a LOT of buzz for this since it was announced at last year’s Tony’s. However, I can only assume that the play dollars are going to be spread a bit thinner this year with many more star-driven plays, and I personally think the reviews are going to tank this because it’s atrociously bad and almost an insult to the film it adapts.
Re: Oh, Mary - I don’t think JCM was a misjudgment. Not everyone is going to blow up the box office, but they are still grossing at least $300K above their breakeven and the show has been printing a mint since it opened. I wouldn’t call it a misstep by any stretch. JCM was also out for two shows last week due to falling off the stage and Simu was out for four to attend the Oscars. Going forward, I think Oh, Mary is going to be like Chicago in that there may be some leaner weeks than we are used to, but when they get that blockbuster casting, they will COOK.

Lowest average ticket price for this past week goes to Aladdin. I'll admit I am a bit surprised given it's a Disney musical.

My only issue with that observation is that the current male lead won the Tony -- beating Jonathan Groff in what will likely be viewed as a legendary performance -- and is not likely to be replaced by anyone who is as well-known as he is: Glee, Emmy winner, Tony winner. I do not know if Hudson Williams can sing, but -- short of him -- who am I forgetting who is at least part East-Asian and can sell tickets? (Note: I assume they will try for an East-Asian after all the controversy surrounding Andrew Barth Feldman...that may not be correct).

Personally, I think they have people close to being cast but are waiting to pull the trigger because they want to give as little lead time to people who want to whip up a frenzy because people forget that these are ROBOTS.
Sidebar: I understand the importance of authenticity, identity, and representation, but Darren isn’t new to Broadway. I don’t seem to recall any hoopla being made about him technically being the first performer of Asian descent to play Finch in H2$ and HEDWIG on Broadway. To be honest, I didn’t know he was of Asian descent until MHE got the ball rolling.

JCM fell off the stage?! Forgive me if this is mentioned in another thread, but if anyone has the story, what happened?

In brief, last Thursday night, he overshot the stage in a blackout before his scene with Louise and they played off as a drunken accident. He was out Friday and Saturday matinee.

I do recall some discussion of Criss' ethnicity a while back when he played killer Andrew Cunanan, in that show about the murder of Gianni Versace. I believe Cunanan was of Filipino descent, which prompted the discussion.

I completely forgot about that series and that seems to fit right in the timeline.
I can say that I would understand the outrage a lot more if they cast the human characters with non-Asian performers, since that would fly very much in the face of the setting of the show. Honestly, as long as someone who can perform the role well gets cast as Oliver or Claire, I’m satisfied. It’s a hard role and Darren’s physicality is very studied and intentional, something Andrew struggled a little with when I saw him.
