I don't know if the tourists will help Company. I don't think it's a "tourist" show.
However, I think GG (and Company) really need to sell whatever Tony noms. (and eventual wins) they get.

Company needs better marketing.
I really am pulling for Grey Gardens and Company and this makes me so sad!

Posted: 4/30/07 at 8:10pmI think that if Journey's End wins a few Best Revival of a Play awards and gets some Tony nominations, it might pick up.

its a definite shame about company and grey gardens , they are bloody great shows.
Pirate queen is sinking slowly as it has already peaked and keeps declining now
Well done to Legally Blonde on Another brilliant week and also to curtains.

Company is breaking my heart again this week.
Aren't these numbers overall a little weak for late April? Shouldn't things be generally picking up by now?

'Company' and 'Grey Gardens' (along with SA) are my favorite shows of the season, so I'm especially sad to see them dying hard.
'Company' makes sense to me-- it's not a show that appeals to the masses. My parents (who lets face it, have a lot more in common with most theatregoers than I do) were 'meh' on it, and they tell me they've only heard negative things from their friends. Who knows, maybe it doesn't play well with the marrieds?
'Grey Gardens,' on the other hand, I've only heard positive things about. Everyone I've spoken to, young and old, seems to find it (not JUST Ebersole's performance) remarkable. Yes, it's a bit off-kilter and more out-there than **** like "Legally Blonde" or "Curtains," but it has really strong word-of-mouth. Its box office failure doesn't make sense to me.

Posted: 4/30/07 at 10:10pmI think GG is just very hard to market. As you said, it's very odd and off-kilter, and people aren't interested in it.

THE PIRATE QUEEN has only been opened a few weeks and is hardly on a "steady decline", their numbers are quite decent compared to other shows.
MARY POPPINS percentage went down further than PQ.
and BEAUTY continues to kick Jungle butt on 46th St.

how is PQ "doing well"? it is grossing like 600,000. its operating costs are 7-800,000 per week. Its losing money just like Legally BLonde is. Just because percentages are up dosen't mean the show is doing well. LB is at 96% but barely makes 600,000 because the avg tix price is 50 bucks.
come on people there are more to grosses than just percentages.

Posted: 5/1/07 at 12:33amShows almost always go down during opening week because of comps.

massofmen, how do you know that Pirate Queen's operating costs are 700 - 800K? I haven't seen that figure mentioned anywhere else. While they have a lot of actors they also have an 11 piece band and sets that are mostly based on projected images.
I have no doubt that PQ's producers wished they were grossing more, but at this moment they are doing a lot better than Company or Grey Gardens, however you measure it.

Comp and Grey Gardens are about 1/4th the size and spectacle of Pirate Queen. And I am using a measuring stick of sorts. Wicked's is 700,000/week. I would only assume that PQ's is just as much if not more. The cast is 35-40 people including swings. There are scene changes every 5 minutes which means a hell of a lot of IATSE guys. The theater is one of the biggest and most expensive on broadway so the rent is going to be up wards of 45-55 thousand per week. That also means all the ushers etc.
If Spring Awakening's is at 400,000 then I would have to assume that PQ's would be much more than that.

I love Company and Grey Gardens and wish they were doing better, but it's just not appealing to most people. I doubt the Tonys are going to help; a lot of the people who watch or care about the Tonys have probably seen Company and Grey Gardens already or want to. They need to market them to the average theatre-goer and steer them away from seeing Wicked, Rent, Phantom, Disney, etc. No matter how much the critics and fans like them, it all comes down to whether or not Joe Schmoe is willing to buy tickets.

Posted: 5/1/07 at 10:21amEven a Tony win for Journey's End won't help. Its doing way too poorly at the box office. The Tony for Awake and Sing last year didn't help; it closed about 3 weeks after winning the award, and was doing much better business than Journey's End. Sad, but true.

Posted: 5/1/07 at 10:24amAwake and Sing was a limited engagment being produced by Lincoln Center and actually extended at least once, so I don't think you can compare it with Journey's End, which is a commercial production. That being said I do agree with you because it's been operating just above the stop gap level, with this past week being just beneath it.

Blonde only grossed that much last week cause of all the papering that was done in preparation for the show's opening.
Pirate Queen's weekly costs I have heard from several insiders is around $650,000-$675,000.

Posted: 5/1/07 at 1:39pmI can't imagine the operating costs of Pirate Queen being much under $700,000. If it was a huge hit, It would take a couple of years to make a profit. But now...
