Hamilton broke $2 million. Holy cow.
Bright Star had their best week yet, that gross should about break them even (I don't buy the $600k Riedel talked about), or at least get them very close. Fingers crossed!!!
What a nice number for Bright Star!

Great final week for Blackbird, and Bright Star finally breaks 500k.
When will Kinky Boots announce its closing? The numbers have just been so bleak lately. But then again it may just keep going at those numbers like Jersey Boys. It must just be so depressing to perform consistently to a 2/3s full house.
Eh, the cast is still getting paid and have jobs, I'm sure they're fine.
It was an improved week for just about everyone.
Before getting too excited about Bright Star, though, it may be advisable to note that it's still the second-lowest grossing musical (after Fun Home), and is even being soundly trounced by Blackbird, a straight play.

It was Blackbird's closing week so that's not really an apt comparison. I don't think it matters how they compare to the other musicals--what matters is how much money they make compared to what they spend. I'm choosing to remain optimistic! Let's hope the upward trajectory continues!!!
re Bright Star, remember that these are gross gross numbers; it's still under water but obviously better than the week before.
Incidentally, I think what Martin said in the intro was spot-on but devastating to his show-and by the look on his face after he said it I think he knew that.

OK then look at all the other weeks. Blackbird's grosses have still been comparable to Bright Star, and they have way fewer people to pay.

Oh I don't disagree Blackbird is making more/losing less than bright star. But I don't think it's fair to say it's being "soundly trounced" by Blackbird because the latter's grosses were larger in its closing week. And I did go back and look, and Bright Star's grosses for the last few weeks are actually higher than those of Blackbird.
But my point is it's not fair to compare the grosses of one show to another. It's not a competition and a show that makes less money than another can still succeed and stay open. I don't know that Bright Star is making enough for that to actually be true and I'm sure they're probably still struggling. But I hope the increases continue and they can hang on a bit longer.

They also have two major names above the title, so...

Why is An Act of God doing so poorly? And how do you think it's doing compared to the similar Fully Committed?
I wonder how long Paramour will succeed under the radar (at least in terms of critical praise) like this. It seems like the Lyric's most successful tenant in a while. I still have no desire to see it though.
I hope Eclipsed and The King and I finish strong.
"Why is An Act of God doing so poorly?"
1. Everyone who wanted to see it saw it the first time around.
2. Sean Hayes is a nobody. The only thing for which he was ever a somebody went off the air a decade ago.
3. It's not really very good.

What did he say?
It was somewhere across the lines that bright star only made it to Broadway because he was famous.
Yeah, something like you can make it to Broadway by either working super hard or being famous.
might BRIGHT STAR be around their weekly nut with those grosses? Hope it stays open through the summer at least.

Either way, to call it "devastating to the show" is quite the stretch. It was obviously a joke, and I'd be shocked if anyone beyond us on this board even remembered it.

Your show is hanging on by a thread (actually the thread already broke but you contributed a cool mil to keep it on life support until you got the exposure that the Tonys represent. And in that moment, you say something that is "obviously a joke" that plants in the minds of the people you desperately need to sell tickets to that the only reason it is on Broadway is because you are famous. I don't think it's a stretch to say that's devastating.

I just rewatched that clip, and if anyone had a problem with that comment it certainly wasn't that audience based on the reaction. The only minds its planting in (to the point where you aren't going to see a show) are those looking for a reason to be offended.

The audience at the Tonys are ass kissing people in the industry- they will laugh at anything and they will sit silently in rapture while listening to acceptance speech drival from Jeffry Sellers. And the rest are fangirls and people who want to be part of the theatrical community even though they buy tickets from TDF.
the live audience is, by definition, not the audience anyone is trying to sell tickets to. Most of them already saw the show if they wanted to. for free. I'm not sure your point. If you have any doubts about the effect, seek out the show's publicist.
The reality is, Bright Star had an extremely extensive prenatal life. It had a reading at NY Film in 2013, followed by several more workshops leading to a first out of town tryout, before a SECOND out of town tryout. Clearly Mr. Martin was making a joke (which killed), because it was just that: a joke. He did put in the work and his show had a 4 year gestation period before its Broadway debut which is why it is so special, in my opinion.
Also, lighten up!
