"Didn't American Idiot have to cancel a show to perform on America's Got Talent last week?"
I know their MOnday show was canceled...I think Tuesday was as well. (I only recall it since I tried finiding tickets for one of those days before school started.
Tuesday was canceled; Monday was not. They switched back to the Tuesday-Sunday schedule, which might be a reason for the low numbers because people might not have known that there were two performances on Sunday. Also, they had discounts for September... $65 and $50 tickets.
*shrugs* Their promotion for this week ($27 student tickets) might also reflect in next week's numbers.

There are some pretty good shows out there which would have a chance on Broadway. But in this economy, when you see good shows struggling, it is more difficult to find investors. If you have a nice show like N2N do you want to up against Spiderman through the summer, even if Spiderman is lousy?
Every week a new blockbuster movie opens and it makes 100M before people realize it stinks. In the mean time, good films break even and recoup on Netflx. Even if you win the Tony, recouping is no guarantee.

assjb4ever...
i would guess that the show will stick around a little longer for those very same reasons that most bww.com ppl dislike the show...
its fun(yet generic)music/dancing, and traditional(yet predictable)story are simpily very easy for the AVERAGE broadway patron to enjoy (tourist, teens, young adults, families, etc)... in otherwords it appeals to the massses and has a much wider auidence than other new shows like Fela, AI or ALNM.

ALNM isn't new, but I know what you mean.
Was someone out of Addams Family this week?

one week of bad numbers does not mean a death sentence for a show... and dont look at percentages, look at avg ticket price and total money in. as long as they are covering the running cost, they are golden.
and most of these shows have a reserve built in that will cover a couple low number weeks. I think most shows will hold out until the holidays, then we'll see the usual 1/3 closings...

Posted: 9/14/10 at 6:23am^Most of us are looking at the numbers. Next to Normal's running cost is $230,000 it is dangerously close to going under. David Stone also said he dipped heavily into the shows reserve for preview losses (free tickets to those who would give good word of mouth).

Next to Normal recouped at the start of the year.
Mary Poppins can keep low profile when it is quiet and rake it in when it is busier times, the show does over $1m a year when in tourist season, this is not going anywhere.
Take note, there is 17 theatres on Broadway with the lights out, that should be the headline.
Bad week for Broadway, but not unexpected.

Yes, that's true, but all of them, except for the Helen Hayes and Marquis, will have a tenant by mid-November.
