Wow! That's called a slump! I can see a few shows announcing closing within the next couple of weeks including In the Heights, West Side Story, and American Idiot.
You can see why so many shows close after Labor Day!
Should be changed to the Weekly What-Might-Be-Closing Thread: Week Ending 9/12.
Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to fall.
I wonder if WSS can stick it out until January? Will LA CAGE make it until February?
Will MEMPHIS survive the winter?
Will the REAL SLIM SHADY please stand up?
It's interesting to look at the list and realize that very possibly 12 out of 22 of these shows may be gone by March of next year. It seems inevitable that the 2010-2011 season is going to have more new productions openings than any other season in recent memory.
This feels like so much more than a slump, this is like a giant kick in the crotch.
I'm hoping IDIOT holds out until the end of the month.
I do anticipate many of these shows (IDIOT, WSS, HEIGHTS, MEMPHIS) will shutter come the new year (if they hold out that long).
wow. that's a lot of red.
my guess is that WSS will start the domino effect.
Don't underestimate the effect of the Jewish High Holidays last week and this week. Last week, Wednesday and Thursday performances were impacted, and this week Friday and both Saturday performances will be affected. Look for a bit of a comeback during the week of Sept. 20 (hopefully.)
It's a seasonal slump. No show will post a closing notice based on these weeks alone. Managements know the effect of the Jewish holidays the anniversary of 9/11 which still makes travelers nervous.
In other words it was expected and was likely factored into their weekly projections.
I started following grosses in Variety back in the late 1970's and have seen this scene before.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
Several of these shows are pretty much all but confirmed to be closing by early next year anyway:
IN THE HEIGHTS, NEXT TO NORMAL, WEST SIDE STORY, A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC, FELA all apparently have next tenants tentatively lined up.
LA CAGE and AMERICAN IDIOT will likely be the 'hit' shows from this year to suffer earlier than anticipated closings.
The real question mark for me is the durablity of PROMISES PROMISES and MEMPHIS.
I spoke to a few actors at the stage door this past week and how they saw a significant slimming of audiences that they thought had to do with the Jewish Holiday as well.
LA CAGE and AMERICAN IDIOT will likely be the 'hit' shows from this year to suffer earlier than anticipated closings.
Do you think LA CAGE will wind up recouping?
That's a good question. Not an expensive show to run, but Grammer is probably making a really strong salary.
So interesting to think that Kelsey Grammer is no longer as strong a box office pull as fellow sitcom stars Sean Hayes and Kristen Chenoweth, who I assume are the primary reason PROMISES is doing so well (its not the material is it?). I could easily see it closing when the two leads depart, but never underestimate the will of producers determined to star-cast to keep a show open.
I would imagine MEMPHIS would probably have to start throwing a few name replacements into their cast as well if they want to stick around through next season.
That wasn't a money-losing week for La Cage.
I've been putting off seeing American Idiot for a while now..I should really get on that now after seeing todays numbers.
Didn't American Idiot have to cancel a show to perform on America's Got Talent last week?
Wow! A lot of shows took quite a dive this week. Mary Poppins is very low... I wonder how much longer some of these shows will last.
Disney doesn't have anything to go into the New Amsterdam, so I imagine POPPINS will continue to play for a while, even if numbers are spotty.

It's back to school week. Unfortunatley, "West Side Story" probably isn't going to last much longer.
"Mary Poppins is very low."
Its grosses were worse two years ago for this week.

I know their MOnday show was canceled...I think Tuesday was as well. (I only recall it since I tried finiding tickets for one of those days before school started.
Beautywickedlover- I know. They were in the 40's for percentages. I meant these numbers are the lowest Mary Poppins had in a while.
