Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 9/21

Posted: 9/22/08 at 5:53pmYeah...the group of women standing next to me at Broadway on Broadway going GAGA over Ace Young and gushing about how many times they'd seen it already and were going back again and again definitely blow the "it appeals to the younger crowd" thing out of the water. Most of them were older than me.

Posted: 9/22/08 at 6:00pmThat is true. I know a bunch of teenagers (or young people) who have never seen a Broadway show but are dying to see Grease. Think about how many young people love the movie; they're your target audience for this show.

It's amazing how many of these shows will probably be gone by February.
And kinda sad, especially when a bunch of shows were postponed because they couldn't find a theater. By the winter, a lot of theaters should be open for business.
SPRING AWAKENING, LEGALLY BLONDE, THIRTEEN, A TALE OF TWO CITIES, HAIRSPRAY, and some others will be gone at some point during this season. Just my thoughts.

Posted: 9/22/08 at 6:19pmI give Hairspray another 6 months.

Poor, poor Mary Poppins. It must be such a shame to see such an amazing theater as the New Amsterdam half empty.
And Hunchback is currently in preproduction, and it would fit amazingly well in with the theater setting. Fingers crossed for that.
And I do think Mary would continue to thrive in a smaller theater, and since they have obviously figured out a way to make the show (especially that house) smaller for the tour, it may be an option.

Posted: 9/22/08 at 6:44pmDid they increase SRO at Jersey Boys? I've never seen it above 100.8 before.

Is standing room at Jersey Boys worth it? Also, I'd love to see Mary Poppins, but how do you get a cheap ticket for it? They don't offer student rush or anything.
#35re: Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 9/21
Posted: 9/22/08 at 8:06pmyes, Jersey Boys has increased it's SRO from 10 spots to 15. not sure why they didn't do this earlier, but now there's 5 more spots.

Posted: 9/22/08 at 8:08pmI did standing room at Jersey Boys and thought it was fine. You get a little bit of a quad workout if you squat to see when they're on the catwalk part, but that's not THAT often. And if some people don't show up for whatever reason, the usher might be nice and move you into seats! :) That happened to me...granted it was during Act II, but it was still nice.

RentBoy, I bought the cheapest full-price ticket to Mary Poppins (it was $50) for the balcony, and it wasn't too bad. I had to lean forward a few times but if you're in the first fews rows, it's worth it.
It's probably on TKTS though.

hairspray is clearing $400,000, after operating costs its pure profit, SO, they are still profiting $100,000 a week or more, they are not going to close.
same story with SA. puuuuure profit.
i dont think LB has capitalized, so thats up in the air and 13 will be gone by the end of october. (maybe two cities too)
ThankstoPhantom

It's funny to see people not really buying into Disney's house of BS. It is so obvious that the only people seeing those shows are the tourist families that see Broadway as a theme park. Only Disney show that can survive the back-to-school times seems to be THE LION KING (with those gorgeous design aspects).
I can't see 13 doing any better than it is now. I highly doubt the reviews will do it any favors, same goes for TALE OF TWO CITIES.
I'm just glad to see GYPSY, IN THE HEIGHTS, and AUGUST: OC holding up.

Posted: 9/23/08 at 8:07amFanadu, do you really think it only costs $400K to run Hairspray? I have no idea, but I figured at least $500K for such a big show. your point about pure profit is spot on, but I think the amount of the profit is probably less at this time. still, no reason for a show like that (or SA) to pull up stakes so quickly. LB, on the other hand....

i know the operating cost for South Pac is $725,000 a week (give for a take a few thousand) and that is 30 actors and 30 musicians, and so on....so its just hard to imagine Hairspray costing anywhere near that?
I would guess $350,000 to $450,000 but not higher to run Hairspray....however, I could be wrong, some of these shows have insane running costs.
Still, I would bet anything that Hairspray and SA will not being going anywhere ANYTIME soon...
IMO, I think we wont see anything else close bf the holidays (ok, maybe 13)

How does that compare to weekly operating costs for a play, like Equus or All My Sons? And I'm guessing since they're weekly costs are less, that's how they can still recoup even though they have limited runs?
I know it's a simple question, but I'm curious.

Posted: 9/23/08 at 3:48pmI read that SA's running costs are somewhere around 300K so the show should be fine. Hairspray's may be a little higher but they always do exceptionally well during the holidays which gives them a huge boost.
