Hello all! I live in Missouri but in March of 2007, I am taking a school trip to New York City. While we are there we are going to see a broadway show, which is what I am most excited about! What are some really good musicals on broadway? I think that my teacher wants to go see "The Wedding Singer" but I really would like to see something I am a bit more familiar with. If you were in my position, what show would you want to go see? Many options would be great! Thank you for all of your help!

Hi there, rentforsoul! Welcome to the board re: Broadway shows

I would recommend PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST or even MAMMA MIA! THE LION KING may be good, too. Since it is a school trip, you'll probally have to be careful about the show you chose. I see you have a RENT icon, and that is good. I am glad you like it, but it may be VERY inapropriate to see for some and for your teacher to take you to.

Have a blast in NYC! re: Broadway shows I always do.

I don't believe The Wedding Singer will still be playing on Broadway in March 2007 re: Broadway shows

I do, also I believe that bashing new shows is bad, and seeing the same old musicals over and over is not really what we need to recommend, unfortunatly, tourists just go to see The Lion King, Phantom, The Producers, The Beauty and The Beast, Wicked, etc. Just because they are familiar with the title or with the movies(I know Wicked has no movie), and the fact that they are famous, doesn't mean they are necessarily good shows. Although TWS is also a movie, the musical is still new, and some people don't know about it.

I agree with ILoveMyDictionary- Spelling Bee is perfect for a school trip. Considering it doesn't cost much to run, it should still be open by March 2007.

By March 2007, several new shows will have opened up. How about the revival of A Chorus Line?

I would reccomend Phantom, Hairspray, or Avenue Q if it's still around (although it might be approate lol)

I also heard A Chrous Line is suppose to be good, as well as Les Mis.

Is it a high school trip? Avenue Q would be very inappropriate. Hairspray is lots of fun, but has toured Missouri once and will be back this summer (non-Equity) in K.C. for sure. Drowsy Chaperone or Spelling Bee might be fun for you. Mamma Mia tours often and you can catch it in St. Louis or K.C. Watch the Tonys this Sunday for a sampler!
Have a great time!!

Thank you all for the replies! I understand that Rent and some other musicals may be inappropriate, but we are paying for the trip and I dont think my teacher is going to limit us too much. I would LOVE to see Rent live, for I have only seen the movie version. I just saw Hairspray May 7, at the Fox Theatre in St. Louis and it was wonderful! I really like the music to Avenue Q. I would also love to see Jersey Boys... but I dont know much about the "Big" broadway as I have never been to NYC before. Im going to see Phantom at the Fox, June 16! I dont really want to see something Ive already seen. Thank you all for the help!

Spamalot and The Producers? for a school? no! Wicked is too pricy and hard to get tix to, maybe some people don't want to spend that much.

Hairspray- you'll see American Idol runner up Diana Degarmo as Penny (most likely)

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

Spamalot

Diana Degarmo left last month, she's comming back to Hairspray in early September though.

Jersey Boys was REALLY good but it's im possible to get good seats for this year, you're gonna have to order them a year in advance.

Don't see Phantom, Spamalot, Beauty and the Beast or any of those overhyped crapfests. I recomend Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. I would recommend The Light in the Piazza or Sweeney Todd, but unfortunately, they won't be running by the time you come to New York.

For a school group stick to family friendly shows like:

Phantom

Mama Mia

Spelling Bee

Drowsy Chaperone

and Beauty and the Beast

But pick something they`ll enjoy too! Like Spelling Bee or Drowsy Chaperone. The others should be backup plans!

If you are able to afford it, Wicked (I went for a school trip, but I live on Long Island, so it wasn't too much traveling).

I also recommend:
Hairspray
Mamma Mia
Spelling Bee
