According to BroadwaySpotted on Twitter, Brooke Shields was at Night Music last night. Any shot she's vying to replace Catherine Zeta Jones as Desiree?

Not that it makes much difference, but it was actually the Sunday Mat show. I saw her go in the stage door and then spent the rest of the time trying to figure out her connection to the show. Couldn't think of any movies with Shields and Zeta-Jones or Shields and Lansbury (though the girl next to me
joked that Brooke was in an episode of Murder She Wrote. The Blue Lagoon Mystery episode). So I guess it's possible. Just doubtful.

Omg, I've been saying for years that Brooke would be a great Desiree.
It's completely possible. A HUGE Hollywood name isn't going to replace Zeta-Jones. Shields is the perfect name for the summer.

I think she'd be great in this. Probably one of the few actresses that would make me sit through this again.
She sees a lot of Broadway shows(like Grey Gardens, The Lion King, Looped, etc) and it doesn't mean she will star in them though.
And I think she is a *huge* name. She is known worldwide, just like Catherine Zeta Jones or even more, maybe not that bankable when it comes to the box office, but a big TV star and former 80's "it" girl.

I hope it does! As long as the show stays open, they can get Paris Hilton to play Desiree for all I care.

Am I forgetting something? I thought you liked this production. I remember you disliked Lansbury though.

No, I didn't dislike Lansbury, I thought she did a good job. I don't get why she is so worshipped on this board though. She is cute in the show though. And the production was enjoyable and worth my time, yet, not something I'm dying to see again.

CUTE!?! Angela Lansbury is CUTE!?!
She is giving one of the most remarkable performances in her extraordinarily remarkable career and you say she is CUTE!?!

@ muscle23ftl: Many do "worship" Lansbury, many just have a healthy respect for a woman who is going strong and getting praise in a career that spans a little over 6 decades. What's so hard to understand about that?
Your use of the word "cute" to assess Angela Lansbury's performance in ALNM puzzles me.

Well said, Marquise.
There's so much more that needs to be said, but I just won't.

It's not a huge role with much to do. Did it ever occur to you she is "worshipped" or maybe just appreciated by her other roles in her lengthy career?

People are worshipping this performance in this show, and that's what I think, that this is a very small role for such praise she receives on this board. If you want to praise her career, then I agree. But this role in Night Music doesn't deserve so much attention IMHO.

I can say w/e I want, as far as I remember, this is a free country and I don't think I'm disrespecting or hurting anyone with the word "cute".

"this is a very small role for such praise she receives on this board. "
It's really NOT that small of a role. She is the key character in the show, she is the overseer, and this production makes that clear.
Let's get back on topic here.
My dream replacements were/are Brooke Shields and Elaine Stritch. Hopefully it works out with Shields. I think Stritch could be great only if she really acted. She couldn't do the old drunk lady routine.

Posted: 4/12/10 at 1:17pm^ Hence why she plays roles that don't call for great singers. Desiree is not a "singing role."

On Sirius XM, Seth Rudetsky has been hinting that Blythe Danner and Gwyneth Paltrow will be replacing Lansbury & CZJ.

I definitely think there are two reasons Lansbury is getting so much praise in this production: 1-She's so well-respected that some people seem to just be ready to praise her regardless of what she does, there's nothing Tony-worthy about her performance though, it's a good performance but nothing that calls for the kind of overblown praise she is being given on the board, 2-She actually knows what she is doing unlike a lot of the people sharing the stage with her (not referring to Catherine Z. Jones whom I thought was pretty great) and she manages to rise above the production. Again, even reason 2 is not enough reason to give her a Tony, but clearly I'm in the minority.
And muscle, it's pretty ridiculous to argue that Brooke Shields is more widely known than Catherine Z. Jones. And even if she is internationally famous, the kind of celebrity and prestige that Catherine Z. Jones (an Oscar winner and a true A-lister) can't compare to Shields. Still, I imagine she'd be a likely option (hardly the best) to replace Jones.
