i saw donna in "the door on the floor" she did a 2 minute cameo...she is no one in hollywood.

I don't think that matters. Many people like Broadway way more than Hollywood - including myself.

It doesn't matter that she is a "no-one" in Hollywood. Actually, she really isn't. She has had many small parts in films and will be in another called "The Fountain." I think most of the talented people we have today are not necessarily famous beyond New York-Hollywood has become more about looks than talent.

yeah...me too. i do have more respect for a bway actor than a hollywood actor..anyone can do movies...but not theatre. so...u win! but i still prefer Brooke! lol

ok...seriously...i think Brooke and Donna were both great as Ruth.

The recording with Donna I think is amazing. I have been listening to some songs with Brooke, I am not impressed at all. Sirius radio has been playing the Brooke Shields version. I want to e-mail them and ask them what they're thinking! Donna is amazing on the recording. I also saw her on stage, she was great.

I felt bad that she got all that bad press for being sick.

Linda Muggleston. I saw Donna four times, Linda four times, and Brooke three times and Linda just did it for me the most. However I really enjoyed all three of their performances. I want Linda to have her day soon.

For once and for all, the reason Donna was out so many times, including her month long absence, was severe vocal strain. Look, we all know the woman sings well, and is very gracious,but we all know (or those who've seen her) that her technique is absolute sh*t. If your head is shaking that much, something is WRONG. It finally caught up with her here now that she is getting older. I am not basing this on anything I was told, but based on reports that she has given and having seen her live several times, you can tell her vocal technique sucks.

Puhleeze - this is even a boarderline dumb question...

DONNA MURPHY - HANDS DOWN!

Dont get me wrong, yes Brook WAS good and helped the show a LOT with name recognition, face value, and her best performance to date on a Bway satge, but...

DONNA MURPHY is not even in the same leauge. She is a Broadway legend and diva in her own right. WHATVER her problems with showing up to the theatre role, the nights she did, she gave 110% and WAS the PERFECT Ruth Sherwood, nobody could have come close to topping Murphy. Brooke Tried and did admirably, but it was still like watching a good understudy and not a great replacement to me.

And yes, JHW was a million times better than JW - how she got a Tony nom over the likes of Ann Harada or Liz McCartney is BEYOND me!

I'm not old enough to have seen Rosiland Russell, I don't know how many people on here would have seen her since people I understood to be a certain age claims that Russell is THE ONLY Ruth, yet there's no way they could have seen her in the show. I don't know what THAT'S about....

but personally, I didn't even bother with Shields. I thought Donna Murphy was outstanding.

I liked them both for different reasons. I am always amazed by Donna Murphy. I was extremely impressed by Brooke Shields' comedic ability. She wasn't the best singer but she wasn't terrible. She was very charming and winning. I saw them both multiple times.

You don't have to be a blow down singer to play Ruth Sherwood. God knows Rosalind Russell wasn't. She was just a brillant comedian.

Sorry Donna, Brooke and Roz. The best Ruth was the original Ruth in MY SISTER EILEEN, Shirley Booth. No competition in any way, shape or form.

Vocally, there's no contest. That was Donna's show, even though the character does not sing too much.

While Murphy was also very funny, Shields was even funnier and more charming. I thought she was, for lack of a better term, darling.

Both were great, in my book.

I can't speak for Ms. Booth who, no doubt, was wonderful.

But I do own a copy of the 1958 version of Wonderful Town Rosalind Russell filmed live for television. It blows away Murphy.

munkustrap - There was also a televised performance of Roz in Wonderful Town which can be viewed at the Museum of Radio and Television. I watched it and she was fantastic!

Didnt see Murphy. I saw her understudy who was wonderful. Murphy sounds great on the CD.
I did see Brooke and thought she was great. She really surprised me by how multi-talented she is.
