A spokesperson for Hensley told Playbill.com, "Mr. Georges' difficulty in living up to the contracts had nothing to do with the artists themselves. There was nothing extraordinary in the written contract or out of the norm that would have caused any responsible presenter to cancel this production. I don't want it to appear that any of the artists involved caused the cancellation when Mr. Georges has stated in writing that the fault was all his."
That sums it up kiddos.
"For me, THEATRE is an anticipation, an artistic rush, an emotional banquet, a jubilant appreciation, and an exit hopeful of clearer thought and better worlds."

To the poster who said Buckley had the audacity to reprise her role of "Abby" in the 1989 EIE TV-movie:
She didn't. It was Mary Frann from "Newhart". Betty was in Paris filming "Frantic" with Polanski and Harrison Ford.
She was quoted in an article years ago saying, "EIE was like working in a factory day in day out. When we were cancelled, I was thrilled to get back to NY and get on with my work in musical theatre".
And it's a reputation that is well-earned. When I had the opportunity to go work for her, everyone I knew told me I was crazy to go near her. I'm the type to give people the benefit of the doubt, and that went double for her since I had been a huge fan for many many years.
However, I was quickly proven quite wrong. It was a big mistake not to listen to other people. People who have worked with her - Wonderboy and others who are questioning this reaction - know her and know what they are talking about. This is not just idle gossip to pass time on a message board.
And, to jim coleman, I have worked briefly with Lansbury as well and she is a real gem.

i have known betty for years. i don't try to refute the rumors of her difficult behavior. i also want people to know that she is a very sensitive and loyal person who goes out of her way to do things for people when there is nothing in it for her--which is a rarity. her rider is often extensive and detailed -- she has learned over the years what she needs for the run of a show and asks for it up front. but i will say that i had a friend that was negotiating with betty to do an AIDS benefit in the late '90's. he said he found the negotiations too difficult and scrapped the betty plans and eventually went with patti lupone. in retrospect, he says, "betty wasn't so difficult after all!" also--i find betty very funny in person and have seen her give comedic performances in a number of shows. what was that play with the word "Swans" in the title? she was hilarious in that and i thought she was a SCREAM in Triumph of Love. she is not such an earthy presense, as i imagine mrs. lovett would be. anyway--that kid in texas has some real problems --
Egg nothing. If Buckley had a different reputation, no one would have jumped to the conclusion they did.
Reputation. Smeputation.
The fact is the Betty haters were wrong in *this* case. Just admit it. Don't do the pass-the-buck dance and hide behind "if she had a different reputation". That's what someone without a backbone says.
Note: I do not personally know Betty, and I've never worked with her in my life.
How do we know who is "wrong" in this situation? Does anyone here know the real Odessa story? I don't think so. If they do I wish they would let us know.

please share some details of your experiences with La Buckley. I really need some of the dish.
I found her acting to be quite extrodinary during her run in Sunset Blvd...... and I am NOT talking about on stage. She had quite a knack for ripping into someone like a viper, then immediately turning a 360 and becoming a lovely, humble human being infront of her 'adoring' fans.
Enjoy. And I will say, your observation is very astute. I will cop to having seen that happen many times. So for those who think she (or any performer) is a wonderful person because she's great to her fans, let me tell you, the two do not necessarily go hand in hand. Business is business. You'd all do well to remember that before any more posts about how so and so is a great PERSON because they signed your Playbill and took a picture and kissed your baby.

a typical weasly lawyer-like remark
"wrong" as in jumping to the conclusion that Betty Buckley was fired because of her past reputation just as Bernadette Peters and Maria Friedman were "fired" too
you guys can dish it but don't have the cajones to admit you were wrong; it's call fair play but I guess that's in short supply here
sorry to have offended you, Miss Buckley...... ooh I mean, MusicalsFan
To answer your query TabooPhan..... thou I can't say I ever worked for or with Nathan, I have met him several times. At first, he seems to be the exact opposite of his stage persona. Very quiet and rather shy & timid. While some folks may take that to mean he's 'Diva-esque', he was rather sweet (and HYSTERICALLY funny) once he warmed up & realized I wasn't a stalker. He's a wonderful fellow......
Rath is passing judgement on Buckley and Lansbury and I have to wonder who will vouch for Rath? What's his/her(Rath) reputation and how is it to work with him/her?
No one knows what happened with Sweeney. I can't imagine Ms. Buckley or any other performer of her caliber would be pleased to learn her director had cast his mother and his hairdresser in "her" production.
I know sweetie...but who are you?! This is a message board and most posters enjoy their anonymity. You could say you invented medicated foot powder and how could I know it's true? And more to the point , I don't care. I enjoy your posts but to me you are just a good writer with a great imagination. And entertaining.
Just read your edit, and thank you. I will tell you that I do not make things up about myself. I don't have the energy nor the desire. I am what you see here, as much as you can see on a message board. Those who have met me will agree. I would offer to pm you my resume, but I don't know you either, and besides, I could have fabricated that if that's what you believe I do.
