She doesnt have the warm humor for the part. This is what she lacked in Gypsy as well...great voice tho.

Yeah, and back in 1989, she had the audacity to reprise the role of Abby in the "Eight is Enough" reunion movie. I said to myself, "Self, enough is enough...that's fifty lashes with a wet noodle for Miss Buckley...."
AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!! I live in Texas and was going to get my first taste of some Professional Theater and now this!!!!!! Please follow in the steps of Sweet Charity......in a day or two it will all be over!!!!!!
The article makes no mention of financial problems directly. It only says,
"We had tremendous difficulty living up to the riders of the contracts with various entities involved in the production. We felt that it would be better to pass on the project rather than to come short of the expectations of the people involved."
This sounds like a nice way of saying that Betty was a living terror.
Seriously, I have been yelling about Encores to do Carrie for years...every year they ask for suggestions...they are not brave enough! If I were smarter, I'd do it off bway...

I think the comments Betty made about not knowing her producer / director was 20 when she signed the deal maybe leads to an indirect disrespect to the organization. She likely came in thinking she could run the operation, and they likely canned her. She's done it before with seasoned pros and gotten away with it, guess this kid wouldn't take her crap.
She is just not right for the role. She has no humor, whatsoever, and she is a horror to work with. I was at the Paper Mill at the time she was doing GYPSY and she was unbelievably nasty to everyone. And she was out quite a bit at the beginning of the run. She is a very talented person, but that does not give her the right to treat people the way she does. I spent 3 years of my life working with Angela Lansbury, and she would never think of treating anybody in that manner.
Exactly, Jim...she is nasty and it totally came through her performance, I thought.,.,.VERY chilly.
Again, gotta say she ripped up the score, tho.

A friend of mine appears in the Ector's current production of Beauty and the Beast (which is supposed to be outstanding) and they all had a chance to meet Betty one night after the show. Rumor is that Betty was so rude and demanding to members of the theatre staff that the producer (20 years old!) let her go from the production without blinking an eye. I, personally, commend him if that's true. It takes guts for a producer (any producer) to turn down a star with big money appeal on these grounds. Tony Georges is young and unknown, and to take such a big step as to fire one of Broadway's best won't be without some sort of return on his career- maybe for the better, maybe worse. I think Gypsy will decide.
and I find it hard to believe that anyone outside the theatre community thinks of her as any kind of a 'big star'. In fact, right now SHE's probably the only one who thinks of herself that way.

"Maybe she and Daniel Davis should go on the road in Virginia Woolf. But who would play whom?"
I was thinking she and Mr. Davis should be doing I DO, I DO!

i have no doubts that she was just as unreasonable as ever and that she was fired. the project was also likely built around her, so when she was no longer involved, it seems like it would be a waste to have the project still continue.

If the show didn't go through because of her demands, it's too bad. She's from Texas and she should be encouraging theater there.

I totally agree. These stars should support theatre in places like Odessa (which is WHERE again?) :o) But, Betty's known for this, can't see how people are all that surprised. It also didn't seem to take long for it to happen. One week ago today Betty was in Odessa making an announcement about how thrilled she was to be doing the role. Now we see this all over the internet, which means it had to have been done several days ago before the press was alerted. Seems like she got into town, blew it, and was sent home.
I was backstage with Betty once and she spotted a lone goat, bleating quite loudly. In one fell swoop Betty somersaulted into the air, ripped the head of the goat off with her bare hands and drank its blood. Man that was one boring production of Gypsy.
BSoBW2: I punched Sondheim in the face after I saw Wicked and said, "Why couldn't you write like that!?"
i can see that. betty's a true monster. what i want to know, actually, is who is the 20 year old producer / director? how did he come into his position at such a young age?
