Posted: 10/5/09 at 8:09pmMy mother has a special site through her work for special discounted tickets. I was just skimming through it and decided to look at Bye Bye Birdie. They are selling tickets for January 28th, 18 days after it is suppose to close. Does anyone know if the show got extended?

Posted: 10/5/09 at 8:17pmLooks like telecharge is selling through January 10, 2010. When was it originally scheduled to close?

Posted: 10/5/09 at 8:41pmif this does extend, it would be criminal...

eris after the reviews come out, roundabout will want to reduce the amount of weeks this show plays. believe me. it will/should be universally panned. the word of mouth here has been dreadful...and the show even got worse after two weeks of previews.
i really wanted this show to be good and to succeed and to become and open-ended run. luckily, after this train wreck closes, no one will remember it and we will all go back to playing our OBCRs with Chita and Dick.

The same people who didn't like WSS?
The only truly bad things about the show are Gershon's singing voice and Funk's everything. The rest of the cast is good and the numbers that looked horrible on GMA are actually better live.

Posted: 10/5/09 at 9:35pmwhat does WSS have to do with this? (i was one of the few who loved WSS by the way)

I am well aware of that. You're speaking of BBB the way others speak of WSS except I don't recall the overly dramatic words such as "criminal" and "train wreck" being applied to WSS.
As I said - the worst things about the show are Funk and Gershon's singing. The kids are fabulous and look like they're having a blast.

The show is selling very well, so I don't see Roundabout closing the show early. Plus they will not close it early due to the large subscriber base. If The Philanthropist stayed through it's entire run with small houses and terrible reviews, Bye Bye Birdie will remain open until it's intended run date of January 10th.
I didn't feel the show is anywhere near a train wreck. There have been far worse shows that I have seen on Broadway. I have heard that there have been some major cuts with Gina's numbers. I haven't gone back to see yet. But I gather from friends who did go back to see it, it has gotten better than before.

#14re: Bye Bye Birdie Extended?!
Posted: 10/5/09 at 9:50pmYes I believe she had more dancing in Spanish Rose which a lot of people didn't like. Is it true that her scene in the bar is very short? *slight spoiler* She enters taps the gentlemen and orders her drink and the bartender says "Spanish Rose? Get out?" Or something to that effect?

Posted: 10/5/09 at 9:52pmYeah, Maude tells her to leave after she orders her drinks. She doesn't leave and starts being loud which leads into Albert's call and "Talk to Me"

Posted: 10/5/09 at 9:55pmI will be very curious to see how the reviews play out. Personally, I think Brantley will be on the fence, because to me the good outweigh the bad parts of the show. I had an enjoyable time the first night I saw it. The second time started off rough, but ended pleasantly.

I saw it for the first time this past Saturday and I went in with a great deal of trepidation because I thought the GMA videos were awful. But I was pleasantly surprised.
My actual review is in this thread
#18re: Bye Bye Birdie Extended?!
Posted: 10/5/09 at 10:35pmThe show is awful, but when the reviews come out, it will only remind people that the show is on Broadway, and sales will go up despite the reviews. Why? Because people love the show and will try to see it anyway. So I wouldn't be surprised if it extends by a few weeks, at least through MLK weekend if not President's Week.

"the worst things about the show are Funk and Gershon's singing. The kids are fabulous and look like they're having a blast."
Well, I agree that the worst things in the show are Funk and Gershon, but Stamos is right behind them. The kids are obnoxious and the boys are way too gay ... I didn't like any of them. Irwin and Jane are too over the top, wearing thin very quickly. The choreography is bad, the direction is awful, the sets are ugly and the costumes look like they came from a Lawrence Welk show (why are the family members all wearing the exact same color?). Matt Doyle is the best thing in the show, and it is pretty pathetic that Hugo is the stand-out. This show will get panned.

Can I remind everyone that some shows that don't get rave review can go on, and some shows that were loved in their reviews shut down. Yes reviews are important, but they aren't the "be all and end all" of something.

Posted: 10/6/09 at 10:22amThe show is selling very well, and may be impervious to reviews. It may also be a great candidate for quasi-stunt casting, like Eric McCormack replacing Stamos.

Posted: 10/6/09 at 10:25amI think something else to consider is the OBC. Chita and Dick are legendary in those roles. And its hard to live up to that. My opinion is to make the show a little bit better was if Rose was played by someone else...(sorry)
#24re: Bye Bye Birdie Extended?!
Posted: 10/6/09 at 12:17pmI think it will be extended just for the fact that its Bye Bye Birdie and this is the first revival of it. There will be people who see it just for it's name.
