Is that Nolan fellow supposed to be that terrible?

Isn't Birdie supposed to make the tween girls and gay boys go crazy. Not happening here!

"Honestly Sincere" was NEARLY outrageouscontagious... that, and that alone is an accomplishment in itself.
Poor Dee Hoty.

I wanted to like it, too as I'm taking my kids in two weeks to see it. Hope they like it more than I enjoyed that clip! Now I am regretting telling my kids they could stagedoor for the first time. Oy.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?

I'm really not very PC but I think we probably should also be offended that the token fat and black cast members are playing the 'dysfunctional' Sweet Apple teens...

The black teen is Brynn Williams who plays Ursula. All of her "dysfunctions" fit the character.

I saw the first preview on September 10 and then again on September 24, and I agree that the show has gotten worse since the first preview...and the clip from GMA was painful.
...but don't worry, Pgenre, Dee Hoty will probably come out of this show unscathed by the critics. She will either get a positive mention in the reviews, or no mention at all. I just hope the fact that she is now back on Broadway will make her wanting more. She should always be on the stage.

Yes Ljay, I realize that. Ursula and Harvey are the two 'dysfunctional' teens as written. So cast the black girl and the fat kid in those parts and call it a day.

Well Brynn wasn't originally cast as Ursula. Molly Ephraim was announced, but was mysteriously replaced by Brynn.

I never thought them to be dysfunctional. Quirky (for Ursula) and maybe geeky (Harvey) but not dysfunctional.

The fat kid and the JEWISH girl. Even better!
And I'm being extreme, dmama, in calling those characters dysfunctional (and just adding more flames to the fire for more reasons to hate this revival because its fun) but even if you consider the characters mere 'outsiders' 'geeky' or 'quirky' its pretty petty (and unimaginative) to put the 'token' actors in those roles. And I will call them token since we have only one of each in the cast.

I would rather have watched Sam Champion do Honestly Sincere than watch that charisma-less Conrad.

I'm sure Sam at least knows all the original choreography to "How Lovely to be a Woman."

Just caught up with the clip. I was at the 3rd preview and I thought the show was so awful that it only could get a little better. I was wrong -- it's gotten much worse. Way to go, Roundabout!

I won't comment on the cast, for they seemed to be trying really hard, but the costumes-- yikes! I felt like I was watching a color episode of THE LAWRENCE WELK SHOW, with the nauseating pastel color co-ordinated costumes. I don't remember teen-agers wearing pastel jeans in the fifties or sixties, or am I wrong?

I haven't seen the show- just the clips- why on earth would you revive a beloved musical that hasn't been on Broadway in 50 years and produce a lackluster show rather than trying to top the original with razzle dazzle and a to die for cast? Not only that, but a new theater is being unveiled-least you could have done is to try to knock everyone's socks off with spectacular production values and show stopping choreography. It's great to revive these but with Roundabout's history of producing on the cheap maybe they should stay away from musicals.

Looks like someone took a s*** on Easter Sunday...
At least he's cute outside of the show.

I think Mr. Funk is the least of the show's problems.

I'm not sure why all the vitriol, but I liked both clips. They both made me laugh, the costumes made me laugh. Granted I haven't seen it, but after what I've seen, I'd definitely go -- and I've never had any desire to see 'Birdie' when I didn't have to.
It's hard to see something redefined when you have very strong opinions about staging and choreography. I like the re-thinking of 'The Telephone Hour'.

I'm not entirely sure that it's intentional, but I like Nolan's "Jonas Brother" take on Birdie. It's a pretty snide jab.

Sean what did you like about the Telephone Hour?

Maybe they didn't put alot of $$$ into it because it's only a 3 month run??? (then put it OFF Bdwy)

It doesn't take a lot of $$$ to stage the Telephone Hour with wit.

Did not like him in the role... I knew I wouldn't. I guess after seeing Marc Kudisch play the role in the TV movie.. I have high standards set for the role..
