And arguably, what difference does it make how Zeta-Jones sounds in person? It's a moot point either way. We're talking about a movie, and she's a bankable movie star who won an Oscar for doing a film musical that won Best Picture and made $180 million a the box office in the U.S. alone.

Yes, and waddingham, peters, streisand, johns, and howes did it better, and either of the women who were also up for the part would have been better. Marin, Scott, and to think we ended up with that is a sad statement. Yes and back of a throat singing, and i can't see her and her agent thinking, gee i really want ANOTHER musical. Add to that her public roasting for her tony performance live. As to someone who said no one watched. HA it's all the media talked about from the tonys the next day. Evey late night comic, and news paper columnist torn mrs. jones a new one. So, something tells me they will bring forth quite a collective REALLY? if she got the part.
Evey late night comic, and news paper columnist torn mrs. jones a new one.
EVERY comic/columnist? REALLY?
And who is this Scott? If you mean Sherie Rene Scott, she was never up for the role of Desiree.
The Witch: Madonna
The Baker: Colin Firth
The Bakers Wife: Sandra Bullock
Cinderella: Anne Hathaway
Little Red: Some Girl
Jack: Some Boy
Rapunzel: Rachel McAdams
Jacks Mother: Kathy Bates
Cinderella's Prince: Zac Efron
Rapunzel's Prince: Channing Tatum (mmmmmmmm.....)
Some Girl is the casting coup of the year!
Madonna could either be brilliant as the Witch or just awful. I will probably be slapped by you, but I just don't think she's "box office" anymore. The curiosity factor about seeing her on screen, in a musical, is over.
How about GaGa? (Assuming we've give up on the approach of world-renowned beauty)
Not slapped, but in something good, she's good for box office. And you're right it could go either way. Thats why Michelle Pfeiffer is my backup (who sadly isn't exactly box office gold anymore, herself).
With recording artists in film, you really want someone who just sold a gazillion albums, preferably 5 seconds ago. The week Dreamgirls opened, Beyonce had the number one album in the country, and I have no doubt it helped with tickets.
Bieber (God help me) could help, so could GaGa or Katy Perry.
This is sounding ickier by the minute.
Nikki Minaj as the Witch!
It really is.
I can't take another film (ESPECIALLY THIS ONE) with Beyonce sounding like she's reading off a cue card for 2 1/2 hours. I just can't.
Even behind a foam rubber face for half of it.
I know.
I think/hope, based on Rob Marshall's casting choices before, he has no intention of going that route.
Unless another Fergie walks into the room.
And before you jump all over me, I don't think he's a casting God. More often than not, he chooses very well, and some surprisingly good choices.
He also cast Daniel Day-Lewis as Guido, which sounded great on paper, but destroyed the movie with his morose, "drama." He dragged the entire film down, along with Rob Marshall, and together ... they both forgot it was supposed to be a comedy (per Fellini and per the original stage NINE. Penelope Cruz was the only one who remembered it was supposed to be a comedy. Lewis can't do light comedy. At all.).
Speaking of the Witch, I even wondered if they might do the first part of her character as a motion-capture performance, ala Golum or Jim Carrey as Scrooge. Talk about a disguised hag! Then, when she reveals herself as a beauty, switch to the real actress.
EDIT: I sincerely doubt it, due to the cost, which would be HUGE and probably not justified. But it would be cool.
I could live with Beyonce or Gaga as the Witch (and come to think of it, Gaga would probably be fascinating in some strange way), but please, please no Beiber as Jack.
I'm not sure teen audiences are going to be a;; that interested in a movie of INTO THE WOODS regardless of who plays Jack and Red. Compared to some of the other darker fairy tale films in the works, WOODS I think would seem pretty lame.
I'd almost rather they go prestige over attempting to get some universal film audience (which the LES MIZ film seems like its trying to do) because i'm not sure such a thing really exists.

And if she does want to do a movie i think gaga would go for into the woods. She was very intrested in theater when she was a younger, the parts iconic in theater circles, gives her a show stopper, and all without requiring her to be the best actress in the room. And strangely while i'm not a big fan she could be genius. Then again she could suck. Just no zeta-jones, people theres a reason theres been no buzz on her getting a song in rock of ages. She forgot how to sing. She was great in chicago, in night music not so much.

Gaga said on Ellen once that she gets offered tons of movie roles, but she actually wants to audition and prove she's right for the role. Maybe they'll screen test her for The Witch? I'm not a big Gaga fan though.

Say what you will, about her normal dance music i myself hate it, but in a stripped down arrangement she can kill it. As for auditioning she should and i think she could be right.
I love that gaga gets a pass on her potential acting abilities but every other poptart is ripped to shreds.
But GaGa acted in her high school productions so obviously she's qualified for ANY musical or film.

She gets a 'pass' because of the fact she went through the legendary circle in the square summer program before going to tisch. Plus the witch won't be a terrible stretch for her, in the second act at least. The first if she takes some classes and prepares, like i imagine she would if she got the role (One thing about her is she certainly throws herself into a project.) so we're hopeful.
Lady Gaga is not doing this movie so let's just move on.

Neither is zeta-jones we've yet to move on from that jordan.
